matt black fb ute

Post by mudgroup »

i purchased this ute from hammondo in january... a quick return trip to the northern beaches of sydney back to geelong.

this is what we found... most of you would have seen this before...

greg rewired the car through out...

took a little while to get into it.. but just about there...
started with engine... turned over the 'rebuilt engine'... a little fuel in the carby and fired straight away...

fuel tank was rusted out around fuel sender.. so thanks to rob (forum member) scored a replacement...
once new tank in.. turned engine again.. and it sounded like someone running their finger nails over a black board... but ran ...
pulled off the sump... anyone seen metallic oil before... ? looked great but... clearances not quite right...

rebuilt motor needs rebuilding

so out with the new.. and new gasket set through the spare motor.. rear main.. welch plugs... fiber timing gear...
turned it over.. good.. and quiet... fiber gear heaps quieter that the steel set i put in the wagon !!

front of both sills had rust.. not too bad... quick tidy up...
looks as though the ute has been hit from behind at some point.. a bit of a mess in lh rear quarter.
was going to replace the checker plate at the spare wheel door... but one you start digging.... might be a job for another day... but a hit of matt black and a new ply tray sorted that.. out of sight.. out of mind.. for the moment :D

new windscreen and door glass...

new door trim and front seat reupholstered... and new tarp

repro floor matt...

new brake drums, shoes and cylinders...

a few door rubbers to do... a couple of tail light lenses.. and hopefully.. roadworthy... next week !

this is where it sits at the moment...

it aint going to win any awards... a few dings here and there.. but overall pretty straight... and i think she looks pretty cool...

p.s... anyone got a wiper motor that they want to part with... will be rewarded with some cold hard cash !

Great work so far Stu

I looked at that and walked away - you were obviously braver than me and saw exactly what you wanted and have done a great job so far. There's a lot to be said for the ratrod look - sort of cuts out all the B/S.

From memory the floors were pretty good and it was a good starting point - the rear end turned me off?

Keep posting mate - it's looking good..............

cheers dave.. it was a gamble for sure... going sight unseen... but with these things.. you have to be a little flexible... and i had a really good feeling... was well described by greg.. spoke to sam princi who had seen the ute as well... and was after that look.. was never going to be concourse...
the worst part was looking at it for the first time... it had been sitting in the open for a while.. not far off the coast... everything had that sea spray feel... all the parts had surface rust...

hey sam.. following your ute build with interest..
yeah.. i spoke to you before i headed up.. was helpful to get a second opinion.. though had confirmed everything that greg had described...

this forum is awesome that way... when people are willing to share advice.. and thoughts... as long as its constructive... give and take... it a credit to most of the members on this site..... so thanks to you sam.. :D

Stu

Did you you keep the space behind the seat - I thought that wasn't such a bad idea given the original design created that sort of pocket in the tray under the parcel shelf?

I understand what you meant by the seaspray effect but doubt it will suffer any long term effects now you're looking after it (taking nothing away from Greg who was a real good bloke)

The seat and tarp sure smarten it up as well and thanks for the lead on the floor mats too - I'm also after one.

Lookin good

:(

why did I sell it

Looks great though stu, I am glad you are overall generally pleased.

Don't know what happened with the motor, you were aware there was no oil in it yet right?

will be great to see you finish it off, will no doubt do a better job than I.

Cheers
Greg
