Indicators going both ways

When I indicate Left or right, the outside works correctly.

But inside the car it flashes both lights on the dash? :shock: :shock:
Not very bright, a weak light, but both.

Or at least they did, until tonight, now they don't work at all.

But I did tidy up all the wiring under the dash that was getting down a little to low near the brake pedal.

How does it look behind the cluster?

The easy fix for the 'dull double flash' is if the indicator lampholders have come adrift from the back of the cluster frame...

otherwise your getn a back feed from somewhere...

Mine does that a when the blinkers disengage. Both end up flashing on the dash.

Don't know if it does the same with the blinkers themselves.

Looks like I need to check all the connections.
The bulb sockets are clicked in correctly. But may still not have a good contact.
Thought it might have been a faulty flasher unit.
It looks like it's hard wired ? :shock: :shock: :shock:

Then again this car has a lot of extra wiring, so I'm not sure what is for what.
Security system, 3 x toggle switches (not sure what they are all for yet) remains of a stereo wiring, electric fan, LPG controls, central locking, etc etc.
I really need to test and check back every wire to see whats what. :? :?

All fixed now. :D :D :D

It ended up being the fuse holder.
The one that had the cigarette paper getting it to work. :shock: :shock:

Had power on one side but not the other, even though the fuse was good.
Ended up pulling it all out and cleaning it up, replaced the fuses and all the connectors.
Just too much buildup on the metal contacts, not letting the power flow.

Indicators now work again, and the dash indicators are also working correctly. All back the way it should be. :D :D :D :D

Need to address the interior light one day, but it's not a Roadworthy issue.
Inside dome light works when the doors are opened, but only works when the ignition is turned on !! :shock: :shock: :shock:
Wonder how they wired that one up ? :? :?

:roll: You'll find some fuses will "blow" right on the ends where you can't see it and will visually look OK.A test light usually finds the problem.

Those cigarette paper fuses kept many old Holdens going over the years and probably help burn out the wiring in many others as well!! :lol: :lol: :lol:

Sorry to have missed all this action, Finny..... was busy with my own wiring issues....the little truck.... power supply to van and aux battery....

Your interior light sounds as if it is incorrectly connected to a IGN terminal on the fuse block.

Test light (indicator globe soldered to a pair of leads will do) will give you all your connections - earth one end under a bolt etc and probe all you like with the other... anything live will light up the globe....
To test earth connections - connect one lead to a known power supply - the globe will light up whenever the other lead finds earth....

Yes, Terry - cigarette packet foil..... quite refreshing to hear that it is still alive (excuse pun) in vehicles today.....
For the price of a handful of spare fuses.... it's cheap insurance to protect modern electronics...... the cigarette paper quick "fix" was not necessarily intended for delicate and intricate electronics...... a 2.5 A fuse is a quantified value..... who knows what the foil would "fuse" at.....?

I recall that the recipient of one of the "Darwin" awards was founded on the use of a .22 calibre bullet... the casing used as a fuse..... it was a live round and supplied power to a pair of high power driving lights which were shorting out....... needless to say the round went off and shot the driver in the leg...... subsequently crashing the vehicle through a fence at the edge of a cliff..... his mate was sitting on the roof at the time trying to get the lights working...... they both died - amazing how investigators uncover events leading up to outcomes such as this.......

ps.... lesson for the day, people - don't use live rounds for temporary fuses...... please go buy some spares now if your emergency "kit" doesn't have some......
