Now the exhaust is being reshaped ( close to where the fuel pump was ) and the rear main seal has gone ............ so the box is coming back out.

Chevs are normally good in that part for leaks, had them for years and never suffered from rear main leaks.
I suppose if its a late model block you can remove the adapter and seal.
