The slave cylinder with the offset bolt holes is for 179 EH, all HD, HR, and HK with crashbox.
EJ and 149 EH takes your style of slave cylinder with the symmetric flange.
Internally they take the same components; but the bellhpousing was redesigned for the 179, necessitating the change to the slave cylinder.

You'd be best off getting your existing slave cylinder stainless-steel sleeved.

Burt bros in Fairfield Sydney NSW will resleeve it or B & R brakes in Castle Hill Sydney NSW will also do the same.

Thanks for the replies and info, much appreciated.

I contacted Power Brakes and they can do it for A$130 pp and $9 for the piston.

I am going to send it away next week.

Did a bit more looking tonight, and re-read EJVince's post, and noticed his gearbox had the spring the other way around as per the below pic from his thread.

Looking at EK283's pic on the first page, that one is the other way around that snaps easily around after moving just a few mm.

I beleive EJVinvce's is actually the correct way around, as when I install it this way, I can move the level 10mm and the spring is held in place. It also makes sense the way the clips on the lever are facing, as the mouse trap part of the spring is actually moving in that direction.

Weird thing is my original pics had the same way around as the pics EK283 posted. Maybe its just a mstake people make?

It is a shame the EJ EH forum has disappeared again. Would have been a good source for this, EJs are pretty unique in their factory gearboxes aren’t they?

'Unique' is certainly one word for them, not sure its the word I would use though, mines a bit more explicit.

Annoying thing is the 2 manuals I have cover so many things, but both don't have a bloody picture of the spring installed.

My gut tells me to go with the spring coils facing the housing, so I am going to install it that way

Most 149 EHs had the later 179 box & slave. It's only those 149s prior to engine no. 81520, which had the EJ setup.

Well done spotting the assist spring the wrong way around.

Dr Terry: . . . stand corrected. I'm basing my experience on the one 149 EH I had, which was engine number H3529.* Now that you mention it, a friend had an Aug '64 149, and I noticed nothing out of the ordinary with its gearbox, so it must have been the same style as our family HR.

* and I had no end of trouble getting rocker cover gaskets to fit. Its rocker cover had no cutouts to take the "tangs" in the gasket. But that's off-topic.

Again my reply vanishes into the ether . . .

one more thing - I notice that your bellhousing has red overspray inside where the starter motor goes. Red, not grey. Could you possibly have an early EH 149 bellhousing? ETA: Belay that. In the photo with the new slave cylinder, it's definitely an EJ bellhousing.
