So I changed the rocker plate (girdle) and it made no difference, if pulled down to a torque of say 44Nm (VN torque) I got no compression so I back of 10Nm at a time and only got compression with torque under 10Nm, at this setting I have approx 160psi. I did put in a thin shim but same result.

The confusing thing is that the rocker post, bolt, girdle and where it bolts together can only compress so much so the only thing that can be changing is the rocker being pushed further down and opening the valves slightly which must mean the lifter is not giving why just this cylinder, tried tapping the push rod on the lifter, no movement but no movement on either 3 or 5 as well.

I left it at this and when my wife arrived home I got her to turn the engine over so I could watch the rockers, with the bolts just nipped the rockers and valves are moving nicely and got 160psi, the push rods don't seem to be sitting any higher than the others.

I am really confused as to what is going on, I think I will try to shim the rocker posts a bit more so that I can get some torque on the bolts and maybe loctite the bolts also then try to give it a run, I'm confident the valves haven't touch the piston as I get really good compression when the valves are shutting properly.

I'm rambling but just trying to get it out of my head and if anybody has any ideas I'm all ears.

Neil,

Not familiar with these engines but when I had my chev heads modified to put screw in studs in place of the pressed in ones I found that the machine shop did each post at slightly different heights. The fix was to measure and put shims under each screw in rocker stud to get the same height.

Just left field but are you sure your lifters are hydraulic and not solid ???

Thanks for the reply, I spoke to the guy (Noel) that I bought the engine from and he said they are hydraulic lifters, the roller rockers he had on the engine were not adjustable which I take confirms that is a hydraulic cam/lifters. I would assume that the rockers need to be adjustable if using solid lifters.
I just looked back at the photos I took when I removed the heads after receiving the engine and it looks like the lifters are hydralic.

The heads did have a lot of work done to them and the difference between compression and no compression is about a half turn of the bolt.

Also guys if it is the lifters why are none of the other cylinders affected this is what is confusing the s&*t out of me.

Neil without looking at it in person these would be my thoughts,

Valve stem height different ( could be from slightly different seat heights or stem lengths )
Different length pushrods.
Rocker pad height machined different.
Rocker ratio different or mismatched set.
lifters pumping up better than the others.
Lifters mixed up solid not hydraulic.
Cam lobe larger on this cylinder not machined the same.

I would measure all the heights and go from there. Iv'e never liked non adjustable rockers for this reason.

I've decided not to F around with my engine and just change out the lifters.

I spoke to another mechanic mate that runs his own shop and he thinks it is a stuck lifter so for a couple of hundred $ I may as well just change them and take it from there.

Do you really have to pre-pump them with oil or is it ok to just let them pump up when you first start up.

Just submerge them all in a tub of oil for a day or two.

Agree, sounds like a stuck lifter. Is the oil path on these things from lifter to rocker gear? If so, it may be pumping up, then not able to relieve oil to the rockers. Check for a blocked pushrod/rocker gallery.

That's a good idea Harv yes the push rod supplies oil up to the rocker, I've already purchased a set of lifters but will check the push rod to see if clear.
