Harv,

You can be happy in the knowledge that your oily debris is finding a good home, to wit, EJ front main bearing cap. I got my black car's motor re-assembled and started today, with oil drainage from the timing cover upgraded as outlined in Service Bulletin H114-G, plus the extra bolt the EJ motors have fitted inside the timing cover.

Are any of cranks 1-5 suitable for service in a stock motor? One of my "rebuilders" has run the big-end bearings, so a crank and conrods would assist no end. (Oh, and perhaps even a camshaft with timing gear, for "Found Object")

The block that has the lifters for Harv has cam and crank so that may be an option Rob

I've got one crank that is rebuildable, but is 30 thou under on both the big ends and journals. Has not been crack tested. This would probably be your best bet.

I've got another one that is 20 thou under on the big ends and 10 thou over on the journals. It's had the crank snout turned down a poofteenth to suit the Ross balancer, and has been drilled/tapped to accept a balancer installer. This one is crack-free, and comes with bearings. Would have to shim it to suit the standard balancer. It's the "Number 1 Son busts a crank" emergency spare. Probably not an option.

I've got enough conrods to build a V16.

There are a couple of cams floating around, one with an ally timing gear, rest either bare or with the remnants of fibre gears. Think I have a spare steel gear too.

Let me know what you need out of that lot and I'll put a package together on Monday.

Cheers,
Harv

Harv,

Cam with ally gear sounds good; but there's no rush. On the subject of cranks, a friend has a short motor that came out of a low-mileage EK Hydro. It would have a std/std crank. Downside: Brisbane (and the irony is I was up there a couple of weekends back and was offered it gratis), and the pistons would probably need some b.f.h. encouragement to move in the bores. Or, there's another motor I could get my hands on near Peak Hill which might be a good bet.

Turn crank, remove cam, swear at the two slot head screws holding engine plate. Burr screws, tap round with drift. Remove crank. Do a small happy dance amongst the oily debris.

Crank #6 now at the machinist for crack testing... fingers crossed.

Thanks for the detailed “How to get a crank rod out” guide Harv 😂
Good luck with the crack test 🤞🤞🤞

Can we see a short video of the happy dance amongst the oily debris? This could be important information for future mechanical work.

The kids already think I’m nuts... if they catch me taking selfies in the shed, they’ll have me committed to a mental asylum.

Sometimes, just every now and then, karma pays me back.

I had a spare set of Repco HighPower inlet manifolds. A good bloke needed them for his project, so I gave them away. No FaceBook wheeling and dealing, just the right thing to do. They would only have gathered dust, and I am no fan of shed art.

Then the Repco karma fairies paid me back. Another good bloke had a set of McGee injection, to suit a HighPower head. He had them a long time, realised he may never need them, and agreed to sell them to me. Very reasonable price, and a great open conversation.

Really, really stoked to have McGee injection for the meth monster project. The Hilborn was cool, but Aussie injection on an Aussie Norman huffer on an Aussie crossflow head is awesome.

Lots of bits with it not shown in the photo above. I have a heap of reverse engineering to do. Will post info on my McGee thread as I go along.

Cheers,
(Very happy) Harv

Great pick in Harv. The pump came with it hey? Your fairy godmother looked after you this time mate. Great to know that what goes around comes around.

Yep, pump came with this one.

Plan is to swap the FJ dizzy for a magneto (Vertex). Will have to get the angle drive repaired though as “the bit that inserts into the grey motor dizzy hole” has cracked. Not surprising... the dizzy is a big lever hanging off the drive.

The pumps are very interesting Harv - were they developed as a drag way addition only to provide the extra fuel required when revving these things by the neck?

As far as I can tell, the McGee pumps are similar to the Enderle or Hilborn type units. They take suction from the fuel tank, and generate a damn good fuel pressure (not sure of the McGee, but Hilborn etc are around 100psi). They flow a massive amount of fuel, a lot of which is spilt back to the tank (different to the grey motor fuel pump, which is low pressure and just deadheads).

This setup has some funky bits - a vacuum-driven primary bypass, and what appears to be a tiny electric priming pump about the size of a matchbox. Tonight's job it to try to piece the thing back together and see what is there.
