Accelerator Linkags

Post by John »

Hi all, could some please post a pic of the linkages from the pedal to the carby. Especially the small arm near the top handbrake roller. Mine seems to hit the roller, just doesnt seem right, any way I put it on.

Thanks in advance :)

Thanks Harv. My main problem is the arm near that top handbrake roller. I think mine is out of shape. The drawings dont show me what shape it needs to be unfortunately or which way around it should go.
But the drawing does help with the carb end :)
Thanks again
Hopefully someone will be able to post a picture :)

Hi guys, was just looking up these kinds of things and came across this thread and wondered if you would be able to help out.

I own a HQ 173 ute, goes fairly well and is a good old girl, I have noticed though lately, that sometimes when I put my foot down on the accelerator in lower speeds, (say after coming out of an intersection or after going over a speed bump to take off again) I hear a loud click sound. This is a relatively new sound, and was wondering if any of you had heard or know of this kind of thing. Its obviously a reaction from the accelerator being put down, could this be something to do with the linkages etc?..

TashandBenny,

It depends a bit on what the click is (albeit it is really hard to describe noises on the internet  ). Early Holdens have been likened to the African-American guy in the Berverly Hills Cop movies - they make a different sound every day  .

If it's a metallic type noise, it could be part of the linkage or the carb slipping/rubbing.
If it's accompanied by a loss of power and is coming from the back of the car, it could be the accelerator pump in the carb playing up.
It could also be part of the chassis/suspension is slightly loose and moving when torqued by the twisting body shell.

Will it make the noise when you are sitting in the driveway and push the pedal, or only when the motor is loaded? Does it do it from every acceleration?

Cheers,
Harv (chief apprentice noise listener :eugeek: ).

Thanks for your reply :)
Hmm,
I think it could come under a metallic sound..
It doesnt happen every time, just occassionally, probably once or twice a day, doesnt seem to be a pattern.. I now know it is happening though even when the car isnt moving, revved it from underneath the bonnet, and it still made the sound every now and again. So does that mean we can rule out the accelerator pedal and associated linkages closeby? And conclude that it is from when the engine is under load? Also, perhaps not chassis/suspension as the car wasnt moving when I did that this morning?

Lol bit of a tricky one! (Getting complete carby rebuild in a few weeks so I'll get them to look over her then! :D

Yep, if it's doing it in a driveway, then suspension creak is ruled out. If it does it when you move the carb but not the linkages, then definitely not linkages.

Looks like it's somewhere in the engine - anywhere from carb through to exhaust. An intermittant click is going to be hard to track down though. Try getting one person to oeprate the throttle whilst the other person moves around the car to pinpoint exactly where the noise is coming from (hearing the click from several different places makes a big difference in where you think it's coming from... kinda like triangulation).

Some simple checks:
a) look at each of the engine mounts and make sure they are OK (not busted and moving excessively when the engine torques).
b) check the full length of the exhaust (manifold to tailpipe) looking for anywhere it could be moving under load, rubbing, or where hangers are busted (my FB has one hanger with a rubber donut in it... when the donut wears out, it becomes a metal-to-metal hanger... don't ask how I know  ).
c) check all the ancilliaries (carb, manifold, fuel pump etc) are not loose and moving.

Cheers,
Harv.
