Hi guys,
Went to change the spark plugs on my red motor today but it the new ones have threads about twice as long as the old ones. I bought the plugs from supercheap auto just based on a shop assistant looking up a table he had handy. So either they've just given me the wrong type of plugs or my motor is not what I think it is - on the left side of the engine on a mounting point there is a number HD##### - I was told it was a HD 179 motor. Any thoughts?
Cheers,
James
A case of mistaken identity?
Does this help with your engine ID?

I can't think what to write here so this will do.

thanks for the link FB MAD but unfortunately no
based on the HD shop manual the code on that mount should read 179HD##### or something similiar, its very confusing - maybe Ill pop out and have a look at the other engine mount - the code I have is for the drivers side mount
UPDATE: found 4 cm high letters saying 173 near the base of the engine on the passengers side.
Full numbers are: HD11893 on the drivers side mount and 2811929 just below the rocker cover gasket on the passengers side.

i'll get there....
Sounds like you have a 173 if you found the numbers cast into the block as 173.
Used in Toranas,Kingswoods and even in the commondoors as a 2.8 cast into the block ( which is metric for 173 ).
The only holden red/blue/black six that wouldn't have its capacity listed as a number cast into the block is the 149 which is blank but can be ID by its engine number and the early 179's which just had HP cast into the block.
