cleaning up chrome

Post by hammondo »

Whats the best way to put a little shine back in some old chrome?

I gave it a rub with metho, which workd a bit, but there must be something better.

Cheers

Quite a few ways. Heres two I use.

Autosol.
And a chrome polish that looks like cotton wool (can't remember the name  ).
Or you can try many of the other products offered by Mothers, Meguiars etc...or Soapy Steel wool.
Speed and Style........... One day I'll get the speed bit.

Polishing kits from hardware stores work well on some of the more stubborn stains, on the chrome that is

DR, is that cotton wool stuff called brite shine? it comes in a yellow tin? i use it, its great!
autosol is ok but a bit course, mothers aluminium polish is a good one too.
I wouldnt use steel wool, to course, even the soapy ones can leave little scratches

 You can buy ultrafine steel wool, I think it's called 000 grade ??. It's used in furniture restoration to strip back old Shellac varnish and clean up old dirt etc etc.

I have some here and it's a lot finer than ordinary kitchen grade steel wool.

Matter of fact, it's that fine you could probably wipe ya bum with it and leave no scratches!!      .

Available from hardware stores and furtiture resto places.
I can't think what to write here so this will do.

for initial clean/polish i use mothers aluminium polish, then finish with meguiers nxt generation alloy polish. i find the mothers cleans off stains easier but the nxt generation gives a really clean DEEP shine.

The only reason for time is so everything dosen't happen at once.
