The "rust free " EK

Post by Blacky »

Thought I would post a couple of pics of the wifes EK . We bought a supposedly rust free EK from a bloke in Gosford last August , have been fixing the bloody thing ever since. Hoping to have it ready for the Nationals in June.
Had to remake both drivers and passengers sides of the inner and outer sills, plus some of the floor braces -

Then I had to redo the top of the front subframe area , the bog here was over an inch thick , they had put a piece of cardboard under the dash and laid the bog in -

..and bolting it all back together. Then it was time to cut out the drivers side front and rear floors which had also been fixed with bog ! ! Why you would go to the trouble of stripping a car , fitting a V6 and respraying the bloody thing and bodgying up the rest like this is totally beyond me ..... I hope to have the floor painted , seatbelt mounts done and the diff in this weekend - if I am not stuck on a minesite somewhere .

Aaaaaaaaaaaaaarrrggggggggggggghhhhhhhh....

 Bit of a flashback, having done exactly the same repairs on mine. At least there were no claims of rust free, I knew what I was getting into...

Question though, you say v6? Is it engineered, just curios as it seems to not have subframe connectors. Is it a factory auto body?

Looking good with the repairs though. 8)

Yep Devilrod , its been engineered and registered in N.S.W. , however I dont rate the engineer too highly - its got some bodgy bits , like the front brake caliper pipes hit the crossmember when the weight comes off the front wheels and as you picked , no subframe connectors. It is a factory auto , it had a VS Commondore console and shifter in it which is now at the tip where it belongs - bought a Lokar shifter and replaced the floor where the previous owner cut a bloody great hole and covered it with 3mm rubber ! Also had recaro seats , they are gone too - putting a bench back in it.

You blokes are bloddy amazing the stuff you can do with your hands, ie cutting and welding - pure art.

Was this sedan for sale on ebay a while back with a the VS steering wheel instead of the original one?

Yep , in May of last year roughly , the VS steering column is the next thing to get the flick , just trying to nut out how to graft the high/low beam switch onto an original column.

G'day Blacky,

This brings back some not-so-fond memories...
We discovered the crossmember had rusted out on the wagon after jacking it up to get at the exhaust hanger. Lucky no-one was under it cause she let herself down in no time flat!

You'll have forgotten about by the 'nats anyway...

Have just got back in from the shed , the floor is FINALLY ready for paint , was going to paint it today but by the time I repaired some more rust in the bloody subframe it was too late .
The clown I bought it from had bogged up some rusty bits in the corners of the subframe , so to be safe I wire wheeled the entire front of it and found about a third of the front bit was full of pinholes which had been bogged over ! Some people shouldnt be allowed anywhere near an EK . Have got tomorrow and Monday off provided nothing blows up at some minesite and buggers up my weekend , got me new springs for the rear , the diff is ready to weld the saddles on , the new interior is ready to fit , the front end bits are all cleaned up and the reco calipers are ready to go in along with some drop spindles which I had lying around - that will stop the brake hoses from clouting the front crossmember like they used to - how THAT got through the engineers inspection I cannot understand :?
That should keep me amused for the next couple of days , will post some photos when I remember to take some .....
