EK clutch pedal spring help

Apparently swearing at your clutch return spring (from the dash to top of pedal lever) doesn't make it go back on, nor does the other dozen tricks I have tried, all of which also included swearing, not to mention a sore back from lying on the floor of my wagon plus approximately 10 or so skinned knuckles which also provoked some more swearing.
Does anyone have any tricks out there to get these springs strecthed open and over the end of the pedal?
My next point of call is to weld a wire to it, drill or find a hole in the firewall to thread it through, then winch the wire from my work bench till the spring stretches open enough to hook over the top of the pedal.... Then swear at it some more when it snaps or wrecks another part of my wagon and still doesn't go on....
Cheers
