HR front end into EK which pitman arm?

Post by Grimbo »

Just got hold of a HR front end to go into the wagon. Now I know you use all the HR steering linkages, draglink etc. But do you use the HR or EK pitman arm?

Cheers

Hi Sam,
used a HR one on mine - it was connected to all the HR stuff and went on the EK splines of the steerin box well.

Or you can use all the EK stuff and bolt the tie rods up to the HR stub axles. Its all we did in mine.
Speed and Style........... One day I'll get the speed bit.

Me again Sam,
yeah - think Brett has the best approche - the HR stuff has teh bend in the draglink the rong way - EK is for EK..

Ok - time to throw the cat in here.....

We have members in our club who have used both.....

I had to modify my sump to get my HR draglink assembly (with HR pitman arm) to give me full right hand lock.

My HR draglink has the centre section bend the wrong way around - on an HR the sump "bowl" is situated forward of the draglink - as opposed to that on everything up to and including EH... on HD/HR the "bend" is meant to wrap around behind the sump bowl......

In hindsight, I should have re-fitted the original assembly (with ball cups, springs and adjustable plugs etc).

I was of the opinion, at the time, that I would remove some of the "slop" I had in the steering (it didn't) by fitting the later HR assembly with it's "ball joints".......

Probably will re-fit the original sometime down the track..... and there WILL be heaps of clearance in front of the sump bowl when I do that.......

As for the pitman arm - mine went straight on - there are"keyed" sections of the spline on mine which only permit the arm to be fitted within certain confined placements.......

I know Rare's were having boxes manufactured ... and have had mixed reports as to their application.

I was going to go down this track - but bawked at one report (either founded or not) that there was some issue in the "universal" fit to all early models - I feel it may have had something to do with this "keyed" spline arrangement - I vaguely remember it having something to do with restricted lock - either full right or left - I can't remember........

For aesthetics - the covers are pressed steel and not alloy and I also am of the opinion that the ratio is that of the latter HD/HR......

Sorry Grimbo - if I have caused you concern - but these are my experiences and beliefs in this matter.....

frats,
Rosco
