Carpet

Post by Kingaz »

Hey everyone just wanting to get a general concensus on carpet.

1) Do you put underlay down first

and secondly

2) Do you glue the carpet in or loose lay it

Regards

This is how I've done it in other cars I've owned but other blokes may have differing opinions.

Rust resistant primer or flat paint on the floor metal to make it "grippy"to help stop the underlay from sliding around.I made the mistake of using a gloss on the floor of a car years ago and the carpet/underlay was forever sliding around and giving me the shits  .

Underlay first, small spots of glue if you must here and there ( not too much, it's a cow of a stuff to remove if you have to) to also help keep the underlay from moving.

Carpet over underlay.Agian, glue it in small spots if you must .Scuff panels should keep it from moving around too much.

If your car leaks via windscreen rubbers, keep and eye on those areas for damp as underlay will hold moisture for ages and rot and rapidly rust out the underlying metal.

Thats my thoughts, other fellas might have better ideas than mine.

Cheers,

Terry.

I would have thought the underlay would go down first, but if you want put it on top it would be a unique look  .

The only 2 times I have done it I have not used any glue, the scuff plates should do the job just fine, Trev 8) .

Ive just put new carpet in, only used glue on the rear carpet edge under the rear seat. the scuff plates clamp down well enough , also cut a hole for the high beam swith on the floor and holes for the seat belts (if fitted ) these will hold it in place..

Cheers

Don't you guy's put the bolts for your seats through the carpet? I don't use underlay for the reason FBMAD was saying, Holding the moisture and rotting, I have used two, yes two moulded carpets(one from an old parts car) and the scuff plates hold it in place and the bolts for the front seat. The only movement is up under the dash and I fix that by fitting a parcel shelf to hold it flush against the fire wall.
Hope this helps.
