prop shaft into gearbox oil seal size (imperial)

Greetings from Cape Town, South Africa

I am currently restoring my dad-in-law's Holden FB Special 1960.

Kindly could you help me with the imperial size of the oil seal between the propeller shaft and the gearbox. I have difficulty matching the oil seal as the one currently in the car is the incorrect one. In metric I estimate the outer diameter about 51-53mm and the inner about 35mm. The exact imperial numbers are required for me to order the seal.

Your help would be greatly appreciated as this virtually completes the restoration.

Hi Waheed,

I'll go up to the shed and knock out a rear extension housing oil seal in a spare gearbox and measure the size of the seal for you and the outside diameter of the ext housing oil seal recess and let you know.

Give me a bit of time though, the shed's in a mess and I need a map to find my way around it at the moment!!

If you don't have any luck getting one over there in S.A. let us know here and we should be able to get one and send it to you I'm sure.

I'd hate to see anothor FB not be on the road because of a rear oil seal missing especially a rare South Africa export model.

I'd be interested to know the build code on the body I.D. plate (Aluminium plate and should be in the engine bay on the PASSENGER side lower firewall area) and the subframe number ( should be stamped in the engine bay DRIVERS side inner guard skirt about opposite number 1 and 2 engine spark plug )

A photo of the plate would be good

Here ya go Waheed,

Seal recess in extension housing has a diameter of 2 1/16th inch or 52.5 mm.

Tailshaft front yoke/seal running surface outside diameter is 1 3/8th inch or 34.5 mm.

Seal thickness is 15 mm.

Couldn't get the actual measurements from the seal itself as after 48 years,it didn't want to come out in one piece when I tried to remove it from the extension housing.It was an original genuine Holden seal and was stuck fast.

I got the measurements from using vernier calipers on the inside seal recess in the extension housing ( after removing old seal ) and measureing the seal running surface on the front tailshaft yoke.

So,

If you can't get a seal 15 mm thick,52.5 mm outside diameter and 34.5 mm inside diameter try and get one as close to these sizes as you can.

A 52 mm outside diameter seal would probably fit OK with some good quality oil resistant sealant around the outside of seal/inside recess in ext housing and a 34 mm seal inside diameter lip would be OK ( might actually be better ) and near enough to 15 mm thick would suffice.

If you don't have any luck in South Africa getting a suitable seal, let us know over here and we'll try and help.

Terry I don't think you can buy the old thick felt seals here in Aus anymore either?
I ran 2 new style neoprene seals, they were the same depth of the old style.
although one seal should be suffice to stop the leak.

Seems pretty cheap for a full over haul. You could also ask them just for the seal you need and they will post it out straight to ya door!

I'd say your right there Rob unless you get a NOS one

Did you knock in two seals together in your extension housiing Rob??
Not a bad idea really.

I've had a lot of luck getting obsolete sized oil seals from my local bearing and seals shop that are a match to the old original ones.May be different in design and materials to the original but still do the same job and in most cases do a better job than the originals.

Hope you can obtain a seal over there Waheed, let us know how you go.
