Front Speaker Hole

Post by J »

I bought some new 6-9 speakers for my car for $50. As they are only cheapies i plan to cover them up.
I want to put one in the front speaker hole but there is something below which makes it no fit to great..

I was wondering what this is and if i can trim it a bit? or should i just alter the hole to make it fit better?

also - what speaker set ups do you guys have??
i was thinking 1 in the front and two up back with 2 subs in the boot.

It is crucial to have a pair of speakers at the front of the vehicle if you intend to enjoy 'proper' sound quality by the books. Having said that, I have not had my $550 pioneer kevlar splits in the front of my car for weeks, just the kevlar rear 6x9's and a 12" sub in the boot and it really pumps. Sounds good, so maybe just start with 2 in the rear is what I am saying :D

The joy of not cutting to fit... My old EH wagon I ran a moveable speaker box for one 6x9 (handy for those Sunday arvo skate sessions in factories) and the other in the standard centre dash mount.

The bit you refer to J is part of the scuttle, not advisable to cut it. Make yourself a good solid rear parcel shelf, 8mm MDF (we used 10-12mm for rear shelves and 15-20mm for subs   ) should be a good start. As for fitting knowing the rear shelf is not flat maybe look at mounting from underneath and doing a stealth type install. Obviously using a perforated covering/material to allow the sound unimpeded travel.

I currently have a 6" facing up and the other facing down in the front, they are freeair type speakers which helps a little, but not ideally mounted. As Aust(mod) is alluding to, to get the best sound staging make sure your if you bet splits to have an un-interupted path towards your front seat occupants. It will aid in giving correct staging. Plus the shape of an FB/EK lends itself to great accoustics especially from the rear. Very much like an amphitheatre. I tinkered with car audio around 10 years or so ago, so I'm not upto speed on all the latest and greatest anymore.

My old FC ran a pioneer head unit driving Kicker splits (6" & 1") in the kick Panels, 2 rear 5" mids and 2 6x9 mids and 2 12" subs in the boot, 8 crossovers, 2 100 watt RMS amps, one running an 80 hertz cut out module and the other a low pass boost module. The subs ran off one amp the rest off the other. Stinger circuit breaker and battery (only way to last a movie on half volume at the drive in   ) and cabling to match. 124.6 dB, worked well and I refused to play doof doof... Ahhh to be young and deaf again   Still have some of it left, have thought of fitting the amp into the EK, subs are at a mates place mmmmmm......

I get some looks having massive doof comming from my yellow submarine  8)  Jay, get an accessory circuit wired into your car for the stereo, so you don't cook the coil while running it without the car on. While lining up for getting my car over the first time, my dad had the very small radio running for only a couple of hours and it cooked the coil. We had to ring my very unimpressed mother to go and buy us one so we could get over the pits

Wire it directly to the battery through an approriate sized fuse. Much easier.

Rattles are a problem, but nothing a bulk pack of dynamat extreme doesn't fix. Don't pay for getting it wired up, I can do that for ya :)

The original speakers were very narrow dished to fit under the dash & not foul the wiper arms etc, I believe the newer 6x9 speakers are a lot thicker hence the no fit.
The only reason for time is so everything dosen't happen at once.

i had 2 tweeters under the dash and a 6x9 in the speaker grill in the FC with 2 kenwood 7x10 in the back and a 12 kicker impulse sub in a box i trimmed in white vynil with blue piping, it had no imaging but it was loud with the tailgate open, now i have dynamat extreme, 2 6x9 diamond audio speakers in the tail gate, 4x cerwin vega 4x6 plate speakers in the doors and a 6x9 in the dash, amps are a zapco i force for the 6x9's and just one of those jaycar 4x50 amps for the door speakers and a old proton amp bridged for the dash speaker.
its not all in yet, just some wires and dynamat, its all being sitting new in boxes for years waiting, they are all going to be vintage collectors items by time i fit it all up.
i am making a old style tv from a modern cheap b&w crt tv, i am looking at using a jvc exad in the glove box so my missus can still watch movies in colour on long trips, i just got some triple gang stereo potentiometres from hong kong wich will be inline in the RCA leads so the dummy radio has a real working volume control.
