Mark, I can only talk from the two I had.
First one which Matty now has, was cable operated. Use sliding pins which held the back in the correct position, It had a little bit of movement forward when the pins are pulled but I would say the travel arc was no more then 8 to 10 inches forward. Wouldnt be enough to squeeze the kids thru ...
The current seat I have is an FE/FC campers which is hmm how to explain..... rachet type in fashion. Has a shaft for a handle on the side and steps thru 3 different positions. I got this one as the seat appeared more rounded (smaller back section) and will probably help more with the roll-cage in the sedan. This seat doesnt travel forward at all !
Hope this is of some help, not sure what other systems are out there.

Mark, Try a Rodeo bucket bench, they flip forward and have cut out for floor shift if you need it. you can get them with no cut out as well. Here's mine in my van and I'm doing the kids seat in the back also but I think I might go for '55 chev split bench as I have one under the house.
