Glove box mod.....A simple how to

Ok as promised, my glovebox.... Rather than clog up another thread I decided to do a how to..... enjoy and if anything is not clear ask away :)

It is nothing more than some panel steel hit with some rattle cans. Really easy to make.

Step 1. Make up a paper template using the original inside of the glovebox. Check it fits..

Step 2. Lay it out on the panel steel.

Step 3. Trace around it (I got lazy and used a spray can).

Step 4. Carefully cut around the edges.

Step 5. Place in bender and start to fold ( :shock: or in my case a very crude version of a bender!)

Step 6. Once all bent up weld and frind off edges for a smooth finish, bog and sand if necessary.

Step 6. Drill holes, trial fit, cut necessary holes for gauges, stereo etc..
Then paint and re-install.

Voila!

A good way to keep your dash clean and free of out of place gadgets...

nice work, ill get started on my own one tomorrow (maybe). Also where did you put the speakers, have you got photos of that. i was thinking of building fibreglass pods on the kick panels, but maybe not if i can hide them better

I've only got rears in the shelf no fronts as yet. I have got some old kick panels out of my FC which are all molded etc.. but they're in black carpet.

pain in the arse checking that guage i would imagin' unless you got a passenger....

which im sure there would be no shortage of them in you chariot!

Its very easy to see from a normal driving position, but seeing as everything works as it should the gauge is almost redundant. Its nice to have car that doesn't run hot in traffic!

Although I did toy with making the insert deeper and sitting the gauge in the side so I could see it easier, wasn't needed.

G'day everyone, very nice looking glovebox set up, another good spot if your a non smoker for your temp gauge which is closer is the ashtray, just fit some sheet metal with hole cut for gauge, cheers Craig

That is a great idea and I have seen it in action. Can't do it to mine because I have a monster living in there!

Mine's got the switch for the heater fan! Also the cigarette lighter still works.

Apart from the monster living in my ash tray I have a working cigarette lighter that I remove to plug my NASCO Remington 12V/240V shaver into.

My stereo is well hidden in and behind the spare wheel well. I have a Sony CD head unit and a Sony 10 Stacker and it is all controlled by a remote twiddler. Speakers are 3 way Kenwood's inside 1960's Dive-in speaker cases with individual speaker volume controls. (Front or Rears - just depends on where you place 'em) LOL

Sounds like a real neat install there smooth care to share some pics?

I like hiding stereo's in cars, my Hotrod has no visible signs of having a system in it till you turn it on. I have it under the seat and use a remote control. Speakers are all hidden due to no way of locking the car, only setback in owning a roadster...

Mate, never taken a picture of it! Will do someday and post the pics. BTW I should have typed Drive-In not Dive in speakers. LOL

I can tell you it ain't much to look at as all you can see once you lift the spare wheel floor is the face of the CD Player and the door of the CD Stacker. They are mounted in the area behind the wagon fuel tank/spare wheel just in front of the rear shock mounts. If you look in the back of a wagon you will see a small area of floor between the lift out floor and the back seat it is all under there. I remade the floor and routed lines into the timber for the power cables and speaker cables before replacing the upholstery back over the top. All the wires exit under the rear seat and then to the speakers or along the kick plates to power.

My dash has a NASCO Air Chief manual tune radio with Rola Speaker under the dash as per original. Recently I acquired and new old stock Ferris FM converter that allow the original AM radio to play FM stations. I just have to get around to fitting it.
