Its an Armstead Snow tractor made in Detroit in the early 1900s ,built on a Fordson tractor with a spiral drive system designed for snow.. mud.. and icy conditions mainly in the logging industry ............Fingers

Well done and yes scotty i thought of steam punk straight away. I found in a yard today completely by accident an old traction engine in a shed. The stuff is still out there.

I'd say it is either chains or a gear train. Either way the drums are driven from the rear. It may be mentioned in the link or somewhere else. When I did the search there is a lot of stuff about these unusual machines.
