Noisy Tappets
I've got one of them, rescued from the Scrap Metal Bin, needs rubbers for the bolt holes...
Don't think I'll ever use it though, go well with twin/triple carb setups...

Noisy Tappets
Cars I've owned - Holden 186 Cortina 250 Magna daily drivers, some of the hydraulic lifters get stuck after 3-4 years of use on start up, buggers of things to renew...

Over the years the valve tip actually wears a groove in the rocker tip where the rocker contacts the valve stem tip. When this occurs, even though you set tappet clearance using feeler guages to factory specs the guage only runs over the unworn section of the rocker and not where the groove is so in actual fact the tappet clearance can be a few thou bigger than it is supposed to be even though you've used the right feeler guage specs.
I usually set tappet clearances in a worn or well used motor a few thou smaller than minimum factory specs to compensate for this wear. This usually quietens a noisy tappet motor.Pull your rocker gear off if you want to and have a look at the wear on the rocker where it contacts the valve stem tip and if its a well used motor you will most likely see the wear I'm talking about.Make sure you adjust tappets when the motor is hot. There used to be special rocker refaceing equipment years ago to reface the worn rocker ends but try a decent head rebuilding place to see if they can reface the rocker tips for you however I wouldn't really worry too much about it.....noisy tappets in a grey is all part of the fun of owning one.
There could be other noisy valve train causes like worn rocker bushes etc but try the above as all it costs is your time.
hope this helps,
Terry.
