Fuel Consumption stock 202

Post by MyEKisdriven »

I need to take my EK ute from Sydney to Perth and I was wondering about average fuel consumption to work out a budget.
It's running a bog stock red 202

I've had a look online for info but nothing on fuel consumption for a 202.
I was thinking I'd get the original mpg and multiply by .8 to allow fo wear n' tear.
any ideas would be appreciated.......

There's a bit more to it than that! Diff gear's, how tall the tyres are and how much weight will be in it. For a start.

As a guide my sedan with a stock 161/ trimatic/3:36 rear loaded with two adults and two kids and enough stuff for a week was averaging roughly around 10-11 litres per 100km going to the nationals via the coast road.

Crossing the Nullabor in an EK ute. Should be mandatory for all Australians

I did that run (actually from Griffith in an EK ute in 2003) with the stock 138 grey and it handled it fine. The major expense other than petrol was accommodation & food (tried sleeping in the ute, but was nearly impossible at 6'2").

It works out cheaper to freight the car, but it's a great adventure driving it back and something I'd do again for sure. It's this stuff that makes life worth living

Just take it steady and don't push the car or yourself too much. If you drive at night, tuck in behind a road train (because they'll mince the roos for you). Seriously, the roos are a bloody menace, the road is thick with them during dawn & dusk, especially when you cross back into WA.

Regarding the fuel consumption, the biggest factor you'll need to consider is the very high cost of petrol on the Nullabor. I don't know what it currently is but be prepared for upwards of $2.00 a liter.

The ute's got a hwy diff so I recon I'll go with your 10-11 L/per 100k's to rough out my budget.
Thanks,

Money's always tight this time of year.
I've just shelled out a motza on the ute purchace and I'll have to fly over to Sydney n' drive it back here (WA)

Then there's xmas pushing up the price of flights, not to mention xmas pressie's the wife buys
{ all I ever get is socks ! }

$2.00 p/l sounds about right

The back of the ute is full of parts (, bits n' pieces) which is why I was thinking to drive it home

Yeah, good move. It's a shame the interstate car freighters won't let you transport any parts or other stuff inside the car. Got hammered with that one myself bringing Plastic the FB across and had to stash some goodies under the front seat where they couldn't see them

what about train :?: i know a mat that moved over then back again  found it cheapest by train and also the car was loaded not with car parts though just general house moving stuff there was some car stuff in there though

as to fuel i'de work on about 13-15 litres per 100k i've had many red powered EK's and the only one that came close to DR's figures (not saying his didn't) was one with a 5 speed manual and 202's are notorious for being heavy on fuel plus it's better to over budget than under :ewink:

I happened to be in my wagon traveling with DR with the exact same running gear (161, Tri, 3.36) and we had nearly the same fuel figures.
Mine might have been a little more with 4 kids and the wagon but near enough.

Using the wagon for work every day I got more like 13 to 15 litres per 100km, Trev 8) .

that's one of the things i like about the commodores  fuel consumption but it's only around 10 to 100 :?

Around 100 to 110. Depending on the legal limit of course  I'm still surprised how well the old 161 does Mick.

I think the electronic dizzy helps too though. They seem to make a massive difference.

As for a 202 I have to agree they are thirsty buggers my old EH wagon had one and it guzzled the fuel. I'd work on 13-15 to be safe. Better to have extra than not enough!

cool, i wasn't doubting you or trev either  more interested :ewink: :)
diff ratios can be funny to i've put higher ratios (you would think more suited to hwy use) in and it's been worse on fuel :?

even in my statesman using trip computer at 110kmh it's doing 1800rpm but if you get it up to 2000rpm about 120kmh it's better on fuel :?

Yeah I think some motors have a sweet spot where they run best. My mates compact gets better fuel economy at 70mph than 60mph... Go figure!?!?

Thanks for the tips fellas,

The ute's runing a celica box so there's a plus, and with that tiny single jug on top of a stock as a rock 202, it should be fine....
Not to mention an old fart behind the wheel. !

But again,
you guys are right and I'll allow a little extra for fuel, I was originally thinking around 10 tanks should do it (,3800 km) but I'll make sure I don't buy too many oysters when I get to Ceduna.

I'm more concerned about the oil under the thing
(, my boy was describing oil under the car when he picked the ute up from the previous owner last Saturday)

That's just marking its territory!

Don't be fooled by the single carb on the 202. They are a thirsty motor. Is the celica box a 5 speed if so that'll make a difference if it's a 4 speed it won't.
