All the ones I've pulled apart had fencing wire used, twisted shut then carefully bent to fit

whatever does the job hey, might have to raid the nut and bolt jar for a snap ring or circlip etc that will fit.

If you walk into a fastener specialist. ( eg Coventry bolts) with your hand brake handle in hand they'd be sure to find a C clip that will fit nicely.

I have found them in the rubber boot a few times, or sitting on something if the clip has fallen out of the boot.
