which steering shaft?

Post by The Camel »

Hi guys, I'm trying to get the parts together for a rear mount rack and pinion setup on my EH wagon. I thought that i had read online that a shaft from a VB/VC/VH commodore is best so thats what I got. However it doesn't look like the one others have used

Unfortunately I can't get to wreckers to be able to visually identify one. Can anyone tell me which model has the correct shaft?
Cheers

That will depend on what column and rack you are using ..............
I started with nothing and still have most of it left.

Sorry I should have included more details.
Rear mounted rack from a VH commodore, to be shortened
HK column, going to machine end to suit steering shaft uni

Or am I missing something

I used a VL shaft , had a VH rack and column bottom half in my car - from memory I had to shorten it a bit though.
I started with nothing and still have most of it left.

OK cool, thanks for that. Was the top uni joint on the intermediate shaft a male or a female coupling?
I am imagining that it must be a male that fits into the lower section of the column
Cheers for your help!!!

I used the bottom half of a Commodonor column and the top half of an EK column , that way I ended up with a column that looked original but was collapsible and fitted up to the rack.
I started with nothing and still have most of it left.

Cheers for all the help
I finally got all the peices together for my R&P steering
HK top part of the column, VK bottom half of column, int shaft and VH rack.
HK column was from a floor shift too so no gear selector :D
Next step is to measure up the crossmember and make a drawing so i can get the dimensions to shorten my rack to
It feels good to finally get some progress
