What's the best exhaust to use

Post by jordo »

I am after some advise regarding the best exhaust system to use on my FE, I have a 202 red motor, manual 5 speed, hurricane headers are fitted, but I am after advise on the rest, what tube diameter to use, muffler type, over or under the diff, single or twin exhaust, I am after a nice sound and better performance.

Cheers

No exhaust expert here but from my experience, I had a 173 X2 set up on it with a 2.5" system, it went well for 4 years then I had a change of plans, I sold the X2 set up and went for a single carb and standard exhaust manifold and changed the exhaust to a 1 7/8" system, well I couldn't believe the power increase with the standard stuff back on it (BZARR).
So bigger is not always better  , Trev 8) .

My 161 runs thorugh a standard manifold and a 2 inch pipe and sports muffler (quiet one). Sounds alright for a stocky and seems to work well. On my old ute I had a set of pacemakers running into a 2 1/4 inch system and a good flowing sports muffler, up over the diff and seemed to work well. But a GOOD exhaust shop should be able to build one that suits the car/engine/noise you want.

2 inch single will do nicely on anything stock to mild say 25/65 cam, then 2 1/4 for most worked street stuff. 2 1/2 is for pretty serious engines that like to rev

My ute fell into this category. High comp, cam, headwork, balanced, blueprinted etc... was fun but broke lots of driveline bits
