new engineering requirement warning

Post by matches »

hi guys,
i was talking to my engineer this morning and he told me that new NSW engineering laws are coming in september that are going to upset alot of hotrodders. he's unsure on details at this point, but he said that most (if not all) rods won't be able to pass these new laws. so if you have a rod project, get out to the garage and get it finished! i will keep everyone posted as i hear anything, unless someone else hears details and puts them up.
cheers, luke.

There has been some talk of no longer being able to register rods or repro's as the type.

xxxx ample: a fibreglass body on reproduction rails will no longer be able to be registered as a 1932 or 1934 &*#@, and would therefore be subjected to current ICV (Individually Constructed Vehicle) regulations.

Apparently there have also been changes to the policies used by The Department of Infrastructure that regulates the importation of vehicles, and there are hundreds of cars now sitting on our docks that the DoI won't let in.

The ASRF did a really good job some years ago lobbying for rod builders, and recently the NSW Government backed down on banning cirtain mods to off-road vehicles after the industry and consumers got together and made a heap of noise.

If there are new regs coming in September of this year, someone already has their hands on the initial drafts, rememebering that these things need time to go through the consultation process, a little digging should turn something up.

This is probably something we should all keep an eye on as new regs intended to affect rods somehow have a way of filtering through to guys like us as well.

I was reading about that law Bigbird mentions in this month's Street Machine magazine. I don't know if they've interpreted it right, but basically if you can't prove that the car you're about to import isn't built before 1989 or , more importantly, wasn't modified before 1989, then you're basically stuffed.

And all they class as modified is as little as a new paintjob or wider wheels

if you really have nothing else to do for an hour, read these links in relation to importing cars - note that you may need to be a member of Ozrodders to access the first one. Oh and there's plenty more out there if you want to look for it

More like any old vehicle regardless......

The import thing is bad enough, as for the repro issue its always been a nightmare to get full reg on a repro now its seems it just may be impossible.
We unfortunately are a minority which they can use the clean and green argument against us to the masses. As a whole wwe need to make more noise as well as the aftermarket industry which will suffer.

A couple of months ago, I was talking to an old high school buddy who is building an Oakland rod. He is based in Canberra and his engineer stated the following:
1) A common system of engineering requirements to hold across all states and territories is being drafted; and
2) the ADRs will as of next year state requirements for stability control, which will impact greatly upon the kit car industry.

This is third hand information, so I cannot vouch for its accuracy. Sometimes I wonder about the ever more Draconian laws concerning light vehicle modification. There seems to be a conspicuous absence of scientific information concerning the prevalence of modified vehicles in fatal accidents, for example. Sometimes I think it is an attempt at social control, but more likely the politicians consider it to be a vote winner. State registration bureaucrats probably also need to show that they are doing more than warming their seats and jamming the photocopier.

surely this is something that could be taken to court (if we weren't car people and can't be bothered  ) the way i see it how can they allow something (lets just pick a simple one) 308 into an LC/LJ torana then for no good reason other than somebody that has no interest in modded cars decides it sounds like a good rule says "no you can't do it, x amount (less than 308) of cubic inches is all yor allowed now"
the way i see it is if you've let it pass in the past there is no reason you can not allow it now (other than they were involved in an abnormal ammount of accidents attributed to the modifications) or you take all of them off the road till they comply

i think the new regs are more to do with fibreglass bodies and repro chassis, BUT they've allowed them in the past

There is no way Tim would ever own a VHS copy of Xanadu

He already has it in Betamax

The NSW RTA is proposing changes to the current registration system for modified vehicles.

These changes will mean that the majority of modified vehicles will be classified as individually constructed and will have to comply with the ADR's current on the day that it goes for registration.
