Project Modern FB

Hi all, only just found this site the other week, couldn't believe i hadn't found it ages ago, it looks like an unreal gathering of all the fb/ek people from EVERYWHERE ... glad to be a part of it!

now a bit about my toy, its an FB Ute, im not sure what yr model though.

This is fairly much its current state, when i got it from dad it had most all the rust/panel work completed on it bar the guards and the dodgy doors, and was fitted with a CRS chassis rail kit to suit v6 conversion and came with hr front end fitted with torana rack and hq brakes all round.

I fitted the front end to my partners EH and fitted my hr front end which has commodore rack kit (from Pat Gardner) and is fitted with hq stub axles and hoppers stoppers 300mm twin piston brakes. I have also fitted VR commodore steering column to the car, (haven't finished it though)

I am also fitting the full VR commodore wiring harness and v6/4l60e, this will be mated to VN V8 LSD rear disc diff.

note: this above pic was taken when the engine was in the EK sedan i used to have (i had to sell it to get the ute, much to my sadness, but the ute is rarer and in far better condition than the EK was)

i have been trying to do as much of the work myself that i can, like making the engine mounts, sump and custom exhaust manifolds, which i have recently completed and been able to get the pipes out of the engine bay without cutting holes in the guards - i am quite proud of them to be honest.

well anyways thats about enough for my first post i think, it gives everyone a good overview of what im doing and where im up to with it all.

i also noticed there were a few people posting some questions about v6 conversions, im hoping i will be able to help them out a bit.

i have a commodore, but thats not the point, i want the look of the fb/ek's but i want one to stop and go like a new car with some modern comforts of new cars, such as the wipers and high beams on the stalks, and the adjustable steering column (up and down and in and out adjustments)

plus half the fun of it is modifying everything and getting it all going.

I dunno about the column or wheels, but other than that good work. Keep us posted as I would like to see how it turns out.

Hey Luke hate to say it but the aim for my sedan will be something along these lines eventually. It will either get V6, 4 speed auto or the 186 on straight gas and 4 speed auto, I plan on driving the wheels off mine and the 161 just ain't gonna cut it in the long run. Plus seeing as very soon we will have 2 kids I want all the extra cash I can save in my pocket for the plans I have for the roadster :twisted: :twisted:

Not to mention EK's weigh about the same as an LJ so I'm guessing they would go really well running a v6....

yeah im not to crazed on the steering wheel myself, that will end up being a sports wheel of some description, but i needed to use the commodore column to get the commodore ignition switch and stalks etc ... plan for the interior is charcoal carpet and door trims, and most probably gun metal grey dash so i think the column will look alot better in there once its the right colour.

with your car devilrod i'd either go 202 with efi or V6, but i reckon V6 would be the better option, i love the efi 202 i have in my torry but its getting hard to get good power and economy from them with high levels of reliability ... with the v6 your starting off with far more power in stock form, bit of a tickle and the V6 will kill most holden 6's .... especially in the lighter old holdens :)

my plan with the motor as i have two is to keep the one in the car as it is, its stock and has 170,000km's on it and runs smooth as, so i'll be getting engineer certified with it and regoed then i'll get it dynoed and then work on the other motor i have, porting the heads, bit of a cam and some other goodies then fit it in with a suitably modified auto and re-dyno .....

oh and the wheels, my ultimate goal is 16 inch simmons b45's, but the wheels in the pic came with the VR commodore i got the parts from and they also are the only rims i have that fit over the brakes!

Sammy, I'm sure it'll take a lot of work to get it all together and get going but good on ya. There was an FB ute in cruzin aaagggeesss ago in the ozfiles page, a guy did it all modern for work. I'll see if I can find it for you later, might be handy!

At the moment no, but if the new regs ACTUALLY go ahead, quite possibly.
I have an idea for a Y blocked Tudor with 3 pedals and a hint of the rolling bones about 'em! Plus it depends on what cash I'd get sellingthe roadster too!

Its actually a worthless piece of shit at the moment as the front transvere leaf spring snapped driving home from work monday night :shock: not a good feeling, luckily the I beam kept it from hitting the road..... Damn near shit though :x :x :x

and yes your right i do have alot of work ahead of me, but there is a fair bit behind me now too, as far as the driveline goes i just need to get the diff shortened and tailshaft made then the thing will actually drive so thats a fairly bit progression in the project for me :) hopefully in a few months i'll have the time and money to get that done, then i'll be working on the brakes :lol:

nice ute ou have there mate - nice little website as well.

should be interesting when you have finished be sure to keep us posted, i'll give you credit for going out of the box with the column setup - not my cup of tea but good luck to you!

your headers look really nice hope they go well on the V6!!!

i just threw a VR column modified to suit a Pat Gardner front end into EK away !! It was in the wifes car and she insisted it had an EK steering wheel so I turfed it !

only magazine i read is street machine, i'll have to look out for the cruzin mag though next time im at the shops!

nomad - out of the box ... hehe thats me!! as for the headers, if you compare them to the stock series 1 headers which i used for the flange etc then there is no doubt they will be a hell of alot better.

i have some videos of the engine running with just the headers on, sounds pretty meaty :)

blacky - i really didn't want to hear that :( i would have been happy to take that off your hands, it sounds like its exactly what i needed .... the column i have has some issues so i'll need to get another one (this one will be fine to work everything out with though.) - run down the street, chase the garbage truck!! :lol:

Not necassarily..... It started out really well but seems to have gotten a little lost along the way. Either that or I'm just spoiled with some of the other mags I get.
