RUnning a little Hot... any ideas why?

Includes fuel system, cooling system and exhaust.

Hey Sam,

All part of the fun of owning and driving an old Holden... :D ...just think if it was a newer car it probably would have meant a whole new engine plus more...

ok... well we r still going. finally got her back home over wknd.

A little better, but still sitting on around 195 on free way. Just spoke to Mechanic, suggested the flow is to low. so we r resorting to drilling a hole in new thermostate.

fingers crossed. again???? let u know how we go???? :oops: :oops: :oops:

Sam, now that you've had the flush and all the other stuff done, see how you go without a thermostat. Though I'd say 195 isn't too bad.

hey sam, i have a 180 thermostat in my grey, always sits on 180, even in summer 40 degrees heat, all standard cooling system.

when i put my new head on i put a 160 in it because thats what the book said, it kept over heating, so the 180 back in, all good.

My engine builder put a 180 degree thermostat in my grey. I said I thought that was on the warm side, but he said "let's just see how it goes first".

I know it's been a while since the last post, but it seems you've been going through the air flow/ water flow merry go round now a bit too long. Im not a motor mechanic, but if your problem is occurring at highway speeds. Perhaps the air to fuel ratio is going a bit to the lean side. Maybe a simple test can involve borrowing another carby and trying that. We do know running lean gets things hotter, and in low speeds and traffic the old strommie's jets can maintain healthy AFR, but when the venturi's air reaches the sub-sonic speeds it does on the highway that extra fuel to match just ain't there.

Sorry guys... I havent posted the result on this, coz I didnt want to jinks myself.

We took the ute up to Sawtell nationals n it went fine. I dont think Im getting a correct reading out of my temp gauge. on open road it reads 92 ! :shock: but we put a thermometer into it & the radiator & the temp was 75 ! :shock: so I dont think its running hot, coz when u the radiator cap off there is NO hissing or mass pressure release??

Anyway touch wood, Its sorted. thanks again all for your kind help.

there should be pressure in it when hot! the pressure raises the boiling point, where have you got the temp gauge sender? mine is in the back of the head on manifold side, before then i had it in the water pump where the heater hose goes, it was not accurate there.

i have standard radiator (nasco 8) ) 180 degrees thermostat, cant remember how many pound cap, but the greys bored 135thou oversize, it doesnt get hot 8)
