well i thought i was getting somewhere with the engine bay. i got it welded and smoothed up enough for high fill

but as you can see, the paint has peeled up in some places and really pissed me off. i have put a topic into body, paint & panel to try to get an explaination and remedy, but apart from that f**k up i'm pretty happy with how its looking (it still needs a bit more smoothing of lines/ curves ect)

Looks good without the ridges, what did you do to get rid of them? Trev

i cut and bent a heap of sheet metal, i then welded it into the ridge so it was flush on both side then used flyweight filler to smooth it all out.

Looking good there Matches
Don't be too concerned with the odd fry up in the Hi fill....it's usually caused by one of the many coats of paint previously layed down in it's former lives.
The thinner used or the primer itself can have a harsh 'bite' on one of the coats in the engine bay...GMH chassis black can be made up from various mixes in the factory and thinners can really play havoc on some brands.
The only safe way of stopping that happening is to totally strip the surface and start from metal (I
know you did'nt want to hear that

).
The best way to stop the frying is do the first coats of Hi fill only lightly and give it time between coats to totally dry...this will allow the primer to bite to only the top surface of the older paint and not have time to eat it's way down to lower levels of the old coats & soften off the paint then fry before the new primer has even dried.

thanks, i have taken your advice and it was 100% correct, thin patient coats did the trick, now just got to get it smooth as

.
i threw a quick coat of black on the rear to check for ripples, dents ect.... found some

. it also helped me decide NOT to paint it black with a red pearl (with the white roof at night it'll look too much like an old american patrol car)

YAY!! i got paint today

i ended up choosing F#@D vintage burgundy metallic then instead of ultra fine flakes i got coarse

.
it looks HOT in the tin, now i've just got to wait till some more money comes in so i can go get some clear. then i can finally get the enginebay painted and the engine/ gearbox in.
