LOUD clacking noise at high speed.

Post by J »

I have a 161 and a trimatic and every now n then if I have to gun it on the freeway or whatever I get a loud clacking noise coming from the engine.

If I take my foot off for a bit it dies down, but it sounds pretty unhealthy.

I'd take a vid but the EK is out of action atm so if anybody has any ideas of what it could be please let me know.

Cheers
Jay

Pinging or detonation?

My old WB ute used to do the same thing, when its under load it would ping it ass off. I backed the timing off a bees dick, which helped. The other thing I did was run the tank till nearly empty and put in some good premium fuel, that helped heaps.

Yep, pinging would be my first line of thought and yes, changing to a higher octane fuel can help.I also find the hotter the day, and the hotter the engine is running, the more chance there is of an engine pre-igniting ( pinging ) under load.

As a temporary measure you could back off the ignition timing a few degrees but best to check points gap first as there is really no use fiddling with ignition timing if the points are buggered or needing re-gapping as you will only have to check and adjust then anyway.

As the points rubbing block wears the points gap becomes less and the ignition timing changes.

If this doesn't fix the problem there are a few other causes for a "clacking" engine.
I can't think what to write here so this will do.
