Dipstick seal - Grey Motor

Post by woodsy »

On the dipstick should there be a seal? Ours just floats around in the hole causing oil to come out.. Have done a search on the rares website but cannot find anything.

Cheers

Mine definately has no seal, nor does it lose any oil from there.

It should sit in the hole. Not sure what you mean by floating

From memory, should have a "cap" on it - which also limits how far down it goes...... or is that just for "reds"....?

sorry, can't remember...

Think the caps are only on Reds.
Greys have a flat disc like a washer.
I think they are supposed to have a felt seal under the flat disc ?

Cheers,

think the felt washer sounds right
how much oil ? oil out the dipstick tube can be a sign of engine wear

well looks like it isn't out of the dipstick after all. Turned out to be sideplate cover not tight enough and the rocker cover as well.. Have tightened them up and seems to be ok now.. Sorry for the stupid Questions Fellas.. Grey Virgin here lol

Hi Josh,
when you tighten those plates - especially the rocker cover one - don't overdo it........ you'll buckle the rocker cover and it will never seal again....

I have come to the conclusion that when fitting a new gasket - clean the covers, apply some loctite sealing compound ... the semi-permanent one - then fit them, but tighten only enough until they stop leaking.... if you screw them down too much - you'll damage them......

I used to fit the side plates, then take all the screws up slowly until it was a uniform fit.... then screw a further 1/2 turn..... when a new gasket gets "wet" it should swell....... that should seal them enough - they'll find their own settings...

With the rocker cover - I replaced the gasket every second time I adjusted tappets......
I adjusted tappets every second oil change.

One very big advantage of an alloy rocker cover - screw down almost as much as you like..... not that you should need to....

that was my procedure with the grey..... not that it differs much from that which I use for gaskets on the red.....

I only ever used silastic once..... and spent years eventually getting it out of the engine...... never again....
