Distributor moves
Distributor moves
Hi all,
Just fitted an electronic ignition to the ute. It seems to work fine.
I had to remove the dissy to fit the pickup and it went back in ok, lined the oil pump up and the gear to point the rotor to No 1 etc.
but,
when she starts, it runs for a cpla seconds, with some intermittent knocks and clacks then stops.
I look down and the dissy has rotated clockwise a little.
The clamp holding it is tight enough, I wouldve thought, but it lets go of the shaft allowing the dissy to move.
Is there anything in the engine etc that could be causing this?

Jim,
Was the Pertronix 1864A with Flame Thrower coil.
Fits in nicely (except for the grinding of the vaccuum advance pivot bracket).
But am I right in assuming the dissy wont push home and sit flush on the block if the oil pump tang at the bottom of the dissy shaft is not lined up into it slot ok?

Mystery solved!
While I had spun the dissy to check for free spinning when it was out of the donk numerous times, one last look, I felt it jamming.
It had to be under the points backing plate.
So I took it all out and there is was, one of the little tangs that hold a spring of the counterweights had broken off and was floating about fouling and jamming the lower plate intermittently.
You can see it here in this pic.

Luckily I had a spare good dizzy to continue on with.
Out of interest here are two pics of the Pertronix electonic install.....
Here you see the points and condensor removed.

And here with the pickup fitted in place of the points.
See how the vaccuum advance pivot bracket has been ground away to prevent it from fouling on the magnet ring that fits over the hex cam/

cheers

Looks as if you have done the deed, Woodzy.......
Just a suggestion - and probably non-founded..... if you have a spare dizzy, my suggestion would be to set it up for use and carry it around for a while..... electronic devices have been known to fail in use...... if you have a dizzy with points all ready to go - it's only a case of running a wire from the coil neg to the dizzy and another from the battery to the coil pos..... it will be enough to get you home - or to someone who can find out what is wrong....
I did this after fitting an optical ignition system in 1982 - still carry the "spare" points dizzy in the boot to this day......... not needed thus far... but it goes wherever the car goes.......

yeah woodzy mate had to shave that part also so that the rotor button sat all the way home. before i pulled my dizzy out i marked where number one was with some tipex, did the conversion and then spun the rotor button to align with my mark and she slipped in like finger in bum
. installed the flame thrower with it. the fc already had a gt40. both cranked over first pop.

Edna Blueflash,
The bodgey dizzy's model number is : VJU6BR36
Cant now see the model number of the dizzy fitted to the car, too awkward to see it in situ, sorry.
But I think? it ended in 48.
Thing is, the bodgey dizzy really is no good. Gave it a mad spin back and forth held in the vice, the counterweights are the REAL problem, one flies out and jams dead stop hard on the interior of the dizzy body, the shaft wont budge. Then it frees itself and jams just as hard again.
How about that?

Hi again Woodzy,
I suggest keeping it anyway - sooner or later, there just won't be any more of these to be had - at least you have the correct body, pinion and contents...... the bushes may be in better shape than the next one you pick up..... you can dis-assemble the unit and make the best of two units.....
I'd still be looking for a "spare" to carry around - they don't take up a lot of room in the boot.......
