Wanting help

Post by BILLY BLACKARROW »

Hi All
Wanting help with what radiator to use (Budget) I have a 3 core radiator but it needs re coring dimensions are height 500mm thick 70mm width 640mm. I am putting a 305 Chev I am a little concerned about clearance I only have about 10mm from water pump to radiator. I want to modify/ redo radiator support bar to move it forward but cant see how without a lot of work and still make it look as if it came that way.Engineer say it should be made box section . I have seen Gary's but looks a lot of work and engineering skills I don't think I have, especially in the bonnet catch area. Radiator sits a bit high to close to the bonnet for comfort what sort of radiator have you used or seen used in v8 conversion photo's and how to would be appreciated. A little down in the dumps nothing seems to be working at the moment (it will pass) I think I need to go to the beach for a surf and a PERV

Hi Billy,
Try these guys.. I recently was quoted 280 - 300 for a recore (from local dude here in Brisbane.) so I guess this catalouge price (attached) is not too far of the mark considering its a whole new rad to suit a small block Chev into Fb/EK..

Give them a call and quiz them re- clearance / mods, etc.. They should be able to point you in the right direction..

This link will take you to their catalouge.. http://www.aussiedesertcooler.com.au/catalogue.htm

Good luck and let us know how you go..

Cheers, A.

There is a short style small block chev water pump and a long style water pump but not being an absolute chev small block expert I'm not exactly sure whether the "short" and "long" refers to the depth of the pump from "bolt up face" to end of snout or whether it refers to another aspect of the pump?

I'm sure someone else here will elaborate more on this.

If there is a variance in the depth of the two pump types and you currently have the longer type then your radiator clearance prob may be solved by simply buying the short type pump??

Somehow I've got a feeling it may not be as simple a fix as that :? :? :? ( Murphy's law    ).

It's a problem I'll need to solve as well when I get to the same point with my 307/EK project.

In the meantime,I'll keep thinking of a solution for you Billy, whilst getting my finger out and getting your 305 chev on my shed floor going for you
I can't think what to write here so this will do.

yep refers to from bolt up face on block to fan bolt up face, pretty sure you won't get the long pump on in an FB/EK

Chev water pumps are easy to tell apart - if it almost touches the timing cover its a short , if theres a fingerwidth gap there its a long.
I started with nothing and still have most of it left.

Thanks fellas  ,

I'll have a look at your timing cover/pump clearance Billy and let you know if you have a longy or a shorty.

Finger in, longy,no finger in,shorty.

Got it!!

I know its an FC Holden but here's some pics of a 305 to FC and if you scroll down you will see he used a 2nd hand HQ V8 radiator.

Pics courtesy of the FE/FC Forum.

Just back inside from up the shed, unfortunately you already have the short nose pump on your 305 Billy so its back to the design sheet again  .
