from 161 to a 186

Post by Miss EK »

hey all, was wanting to know wat would be needed to change my 161 red motor to a 186 red. I have a 3 sp manual in it all ready and was planning to put a hr front end in. Any help would be much appreciated.
Thanks

pull one out put the other back in you may have to change the sump but other than that they are externally identical

And if you are running the original 3 speed gearbox go easy on it.

A 186 even in standard form is getting close to approx double the power output of a grey motor.

The gearbox was engineered for a grey motor and the more power you throw into the box, the more wear and breakage that could occur especially if subjected to abnormal driving.
I can't think what to write here so this will do.

thanks for the heads up, I've just had it rebuilt but i was curious if it would hold up with the power of a 186. Is there any other manual box thats still column shift?
thanks

There's the all synchro 3 speed red motor box which is column change but I think you will have to fit a bigger tunnel ?? or enlarge the existing tunnel to fit and you will have to fabricate a rear trans mount setup and probably modify the shift linkages to make it work.

I'd say it's a near identical swap to the aussie 4 speed fitment with exception of the column change linkages fitment instead of the four speed shifter through the floor.

It's probably been done before no doubt, someone else here might know more about the fitment problems or know of someone who has done it or has a car with one in.
I can't think what to write here so this will do.

Not 100% sure but I think its an EH-HR 3 speed that fits with very minimal mods. No synchro on first and they take abuse from a worked red for a little while. My old EK ute had one (well numerous boxes) but I can't tell you what was done to fit it as it came that way.
Speed and Style........... One day I'll get the speed bit.
