Carby Jets.. where do i buy em??

Post by reddo »

Yo

Some time back i fitted up a set of twin carbs. i bought a set of those little spring steel "W" clamps that they use on the X2 linkage rod setups.
FB Mad sent me the name of the mob in sydney that sells all that sort of stuff.
Can someone reply with the name of the company and .. do they sell stromberg jets??
I am chasing a .051 main for the Ej.

The car has an adjustable main jet and the .o51 main looks to have been drilled out?? :?
The car has a massive flat spot from just above idle to around 1/3 throttle. I have adjusted the main out and in at 1/2 throttle and can get it running sweet above 1/2 throttle ... but when i let it back to idle and give it to it again it just sucks masses of air and starts to die until the motor struggles up to around 2000 RPM and recovers.

Thought i would try a stock main and piss the adjustable main off.
I paid "Re-carb" in Newcastle to do this carb up . It has a complete new kit through it as well as rebushing the throttle body shaft. :?: :?:

G'day Reddo,

Hardimans in Sydney was a mob that Stewart ( parisian 62 ) dealt with when he was doing his twin carbs so they may have some different size jets.Phone 02 87238888.

You could also try American Autos ( google and it should come up ) as they did have listed on their website some different size jets but when I last spoke to them the work experience kid didn't even know what a carburetter was ( at first, until I told him ) and I got no where with them on that call.Haven't bothered with them since.

It kinda sounds like the intial idle to mid range revving problem could be a problem with the accelerator pump plunger not giving all of its "squirt" so to speak or blocked/partly blocked feed jets/passages for low to mid range.

I guess that you are running a fuel filter??

If not, with all the shit that gets accumulated over the years in old steel fuel tanks it could be a case that some of that shit has made its way to the carby and blocking/partly blocking some of the jets and passages.

Also check that your vacuum advance is working in the distributor as that can also give symptoms as you describe.Undo the steel vacuum line from the carby and suck on it and see if the points base plate in the dizzy moves when you suck.If it doesn't the line could be blocked/vacuum advance diaphragm could be perforated or the points base plate could be seized.

Could be other problems causing it,

I'll give you a ph call tonight for a yack
I can't think what to write here so this will do.

Hi Terry

Have ticked all of your boxes. :D
Car has a clean fuel filter.
Carb is as brand new with kit through it.. although i suspect that something could be blocking one of the airways or something.
Took the carb off and removed / checked all jets where clear and no muck in bowl.

Clean ed points , rotor button and lead carbons in cap. cleaned plugs.
Thought about auto advance .. then forgot about becuase i reasoned that even with a slow advance it would not cause such a massive flat spoyt just above idle through to roughly 1/3 throttle.
Sure does point to the accelrator pump/plunger but it IS brand new.. i checked it when i had the carb off last night.

I should just take it back to recarb and throw it at em......!!!

Talk to ya later today.

just on that sucking on the vacuum line suggestion, just how hard do you have to suck, because mine moves freely and all, but its way beyond my skills to provide a powerful enough suck to get things moving.

... well that all sounds a little weird, doesnt it?

Hey Reddo, sounds like your experiencing the same issue that I have been having.

I'm going to put a new kit into the carby and see if it changes anything.

If you have a second person available, try this !

Take off the air filter, and while the car is running, put your hands over the top of the carby so it reduces the amount of air getting in. (Hold your hands steady, because as you reduce the amount or air getting through it will suck on your hands.) Might be hard with twin carbies ?

Does this allow the engine to rev and not go into stall / flat spot mode ?

If so, it's the same as mine. Either too much air getting through or not enough petrol being sucked in ?
