big alternator options

Post by FCCOOL »

i baught a prestolite-lucas 70A alternator a while ago, it was new, ive barely used it and it wasnt charging, turns out the rectifier is cactus, to get it going again is going to cost $150 in parts wich is what the alternator cost me new with postage.
i dont know if this alternator would have enough power with the crane ignition, twin thermos, stereo and 3 amplifiers, holley blue fuel pump. wipers, heater, 4 headlights if i use the power windows or the compressor at the same time or the large 150gph water injection pump at the same time.
Also i havent seen these alternators on ebay for a while so getting a replacement for $150 wont happen.
so i took a old bosch internal reg alternator to a auto elec and asked them to rebuild it to 80+ Amps, they said no probs but later i rang back and they said the parts to upgrade it were no longer available so i asked them to get me a price on a 85 amp bosch commodore v8 alternator wich turned out to be a bit more than i was planning to spend at $390.

I have seen some chrome 100 amp single wire alternators on ebay
between $150 and $200, has any one used one of these?

can you service them?

do they last?

I bought 3 Bosch alternators from Repco last month, guess where they were made............................

China.

So with that, I would guess those units selling on ebay would be form China as well, only problem is if you buy things from ebay, even though they claim there warranted, how do you really go when things shit em selves.

FCCOOL, those Bosch units where made in China, The sticker said so, and where not trying to hide the fact, and looking at the quality, was definitely a lot cheaper looking than the true German made or even Ozzie units.
Only Today I fitted a Brand new Bosch Starter Motor to VT v6 Commodore, MADE IN CHINA...................
Also ordered and received a Holden Genuine Central locking unit for VS V6, because they were cheaper than aftermarket and to my not so surprised ego, was made in! you guessed it CHINA.
Company's Get offshore Manufacture to make products at a pooftenth of the price, make a 1500 to 3000% mark up and still sell it cheaper, than if we were to make it ourselves.
People wonder how our economy can go bad, what do they expect. True workers get punted all for the Company's Head Hogs so they can get their big wages and Super Retirement packages.

We went camping at Easter with a group of 4 other families, whilst around the fire we had this discussion on products and where they were made, (you know about the whole China Syndrome thing)and tried to think of things that we had, that were made in Australia. A little sad but there was nothing to our knowledge, possibly other that the food we were eating was ourselves and our kids.

Yes it is very hard to buy Australian stuff.
I will pay the extra just to know that the money is staying here and going to Australians.
The lowered stub axles I bought for my car I got from Stubtech because they were made in Australia...

My mate has had 3 alternators in his VT commo in 5 years and yes made in china.
