Ute Tailgate Support Arms

Post by Kingaz »

Hey everyone unsure whether to use the original Tailgate support arms for the ute and i think the metla will begin to scratch and damage the paint even though the rubbers on the end turn they just dont move wel enough when the gate is closing.

Im after an alternative what have other people used? Is there a product out there that could substitute the support arms that looks good

Ideas, suggestions and more importantly photos would be much apprecated

cheers

this is something i have been thinking about for awhile

i found that the rods get stuck a fair bit before so i was going to do away with them and use some stainless braided wire

check out some early model utes and wagons to get some ideas about what else could be used - im more than happy with the straps on my eh wagon

Hi All

A while back i was considering the same thing.
I actually bought the loop , wire , hook and double crimps from a ships chandlers supplies place. cost for the bits was around $20 or $25 from memory. They fitted ok but i was always worried about just how much weight my crimping jobs would hold...especially when i was climbing on the tailgate or loading a motorbike....... so i added small u bolt clamps. to back up the crimps. Ended up looking like a real mess and the straps would always want to fold into the gap where the tailgate closed.

I spotted a bloke on ebay selling new tailgate wire straps with hooks and loop to suit a commodore ute. I sent him an email asking if he could make up a set to suit an EK. when i supplied him the measurement between centre of hook to "bolt to body point" he replied that they where the same length as the commodore straps.

I never got around to fitting them to the EK but did end up buying a set about 12 months later and using them on the HR ute.. also the same length as Commonwhores.

Adam

I got rid of the original stays and used plastic coated stainless rope which had eyelets fitted at each end.
A ships chandler made them for me took about 5 minutes and cost about $20 each.I then attached them using the original fittings-no rattles and no rust after that!
They never looked like giving way-have moved some heavy stuff and never had to worry about them.
