right side eng mount with R &P steering

Post by reddo »

Hi Guys.

Ok... i know i am fiddling with an FJ and not an FB/EK.....

But the same will apply to all early holdens.

I yanked out the V8 and swung the 186 down into place yesterday. The existing V8 left side mount looks to be spot on for the red 6. The right side is a different story :?

The ute has a front mount rack and pinion steering set up on a HR front end 8) . Problem is that right where the lower steering uni knuckle is ... is right where the right side eng mount needs to be.

Has anyone got a cure for this.??
If so can they throw some photos up here so i can have a gecko at what i have to fabricate . :?:

I can make a bracket and mount so it sits above the steering knuckle but everything i dream up will make the motor sit higher??

All suggestions greatly appreciated..
I know one option is to throw the V8 back in there. It is reportedly a recoed motor but i would hate to finish the build and find the motor is a pieca poop.

Other option is set it up with a rear mount rack and that would mean a steeper steering shaft angle to get from the bottom of the column down to the rack shaft.
Anyone running this set up??? If so .. photos please !!!!

Other problems.
The 186 came out of a HT. I thought i might have got away with the HT sump because of the front rack and no drag link to tangle up on the sump. but it looks like i am gunna have to go with the EH sump and oil pick up anyway.

G'day Reddo,

I flipped over to the now boring old, no jokes thanks  , VV site  and had a captain cook at your insitu photo of HR front in your FJ.

The rack is Torana if that helps, possibly LC/LJ??

You'll need an EH sump, other sumps won't fit although LC/LJ Torana may fit with some massaging.

It nearly looks like that bottom steering uni joint isn't really needed as its angle isn't great between the rack input shaft and the steering intermediate shaft and the top uni joint should take up the added angle without any probs if that bottom uni was taken out I reckon.

That would get rid of the space that the uni joint in that area takes up and allow you to fabricate up a mount that allows the intermediate shaft to go through it without comprimising the mounts structural strength too much.

I may be coming down to Cardiff either tomorrow or Tuesday to pick up some fencing panels ( Grumblebum's got me working over Xmas    ) with the trailer so if you want I can call in to Reddoville ( yeah, I know, ...... I was supposed to do that last trip    ) and have a gander at the problem ....... two rough and ugly heads are better than one at fixing a solution I reckon    .

Send me a PM if calling in to your joint in the arvo on either day suits you.

Have you had a yack to Col in Croydon yet ?? , he'd have some good advice being a builder of Hotrods.
I can't think what to write here so this will do.

Yep  when it gives you the shits that much that you want to dent every panel and burn it right there, right now,   then its time to walk away and do something else for a while.

Come back to it a few days later and for some reason the solution is normally found quickly with a clear head. :D :D :D

Dave68,

you dont have to make the mount higher...try and chase down a starfire oil filter adapter....they turn the filter 90 degrees so they face down!

i managed to get one for 30 bucks with new seals from a wrecker so was petty happy....since there are getting hard to find!

cheers

Hey guys, yer I went down that path and REPCO said they still had 5 in stock....NOT!!!!! I ordered it and got it in a day, went home and it was a regular 186 pump..... Got the remoth filter for a few bucks more... Had to move the mount for the steerin shaft anyway, I can remove a HR front end real fast now.
Picks to follow when it goes up on ramps soon. Need to drink now :!:
Whatever....:(
