Forgot about the Lexus v8, you'd be playing with slightly familiar things, front cut etc... Size wise could be good too.

$1500, hope you are doing the work :? I think a red six will be your limit unless someone gives you a 308 for nix. Lexus will be too wide they are nearly as wide as a BBC.

I just spent $2500 on a reco grey motor and it's not going yet, better get yourself a balaclava and a pistol if you want a V8 in one while paying someone else to do the work  , Trev 8) .

I think theres an 0 missing off your numbers here mate, a diff will set you back more than $1500 and you got a lot of stuff in front of it to buy/make. The labour costs alone if you are paying someone else to do the job will be twice that.
If you have a $1500 budget stick with a red or blue 6
I started with nothing and still have most of it left.

Didn't think they were that big...

$1500 is a good budget IF you do it all yourself and go 6. Motor, box, frontend, rear end, brakes/booster/some extra brake lines, radiator, gearbox mounts, trans tunnel mods to name the essentials that will have to be purchased or fabbed up..........then again :? might need a bit more.

Most budgets for doing a car can be done in a very simple form. Take your initial budget and double it! Same for time...  You'd be surpised how close to the truth this is for some builds.....

You'll need HR front end to install red 6/V8 and get it passed by an engineer.

You may get away with a 138 red or 149 red without an engineers cert depending on what state you live in.

You'll get a red 6 in for $1500 probably less depending on engine cost and what bits you need/can do yourself. You might get a low dollar V8 ( ie 253 V8 ) in for that but you'll need to install the HR front at the same time.

An engineer won't look at it if you still have the kingpin front end.

The more you can do yourself the more $$$ you have in your pocket or to spend on other things.

It cost me more to register my car at the RTA than it did to install the 149 red in it    .

If your not mechanically minded, see how you go with a red 6 fitment as they are pretty easy to do.You might be surprised at how you go.

Worst thing that can happen is you have to take it to a shop to finish off the install.
I can't think what to write here so this will do.

If you can do it yourself it can be done very cheaply. My whole car owes me on the road around 5g's. I was lucky I had mates who helped (mig, time and topcoat of paint) and did as much as I could. The only thing it went out for was floors and tunnel mods as we got sick of dragging the mig down everytime we needed it and a front end alignment. But if you manage to get a rust free car with a red you'll be laughing!! They are still out there, just take some finding. Basically choose your base car wisely, the better it is to start with will save you heaps in the long run.
