V6 FB

Post by Malcolm »

Hey can anyone give advise on fitting v6 into an FB sedan.
Is there any problems with fitment that anyone knows off. I'm looking at getting a kit from Gardner. Any info or advice would be greatly appreciated.

Cheers
Mal

If you want someone to do it for you , the costs would be - in round figures - HEAPS
You will not get any change out of $5000 if you do all the work yourself , by the time you buy a chassis kit , front end , pipes , sump, engine mounts , etc then reco a V6 plus gearbox, diff , brakes, and so on .
It is certainly not a weekend job nor will it all bolt together and off you go. You will need to fabricate all sorts of bits and pieces to get it to work.
We should be travelling to Narrogin for Revheads weekend in my wifes V6 EK if you want to have a look - its a shame your dad couldnt make it on Saturday or he could have had a look then !
I started with nothing and still have most of it left.

yeah it does cost a bit ... the gardner kits arn't too bad, but i have heard of people having to modify stuff to fit ....

i chose the castlemaine rod shop chassis kit for strength and it looked the goods, and if my floor rails were stock (mine have been replaced) then it would have all bolted straight in ... no biggie!

the sump i chose to make myself after looking at some pictures of a gardner version, i also chose to make my own exhausts and was able to get the pipes out of the bay without going through the inner guards ....

im also doing a few things differently like radiator, steering etc to the normal kits, but the gardner rack conversion i used and it looks good ....

engine mounts i looked at pics of the crs/gardner ones to make my own customed version of them to suit my slightly different needs, i think my mounts are stronger and i also located the hr engine mounts in the right spot to suit my engine location, i believe the gardner/crs mounts connect to the stock hr mount locations.

i've chosen to use a VR Commodore engine and auto, along with the COMPLETE VR wiring loom so therefore the garder wiring kit wasn't needed for me and the speedo will be an autometer digital unit that will accept the pulse from the commodore loom so theres nothing needed there.

these are the main things i guess ... but brakes and heater/demister are other considerations.

my advise, if you have the skills and tools, do it yourself, it will take longer but i reckon you will have a better result in the end (fits your car perfectly) and will save ALOT of dollars.

i also have alot of pictures of the conversion so far on my website (www.oldholdens.com) and would be happy to take some snaps of specific areas of interest for you.
Regards,

Sammy.

Around about the same amount of work, but you are up for a bigger diff and more cost to reco the motor and trans.

i've seen a few v8 conversions and they are a bit too tight in the bay for my liking, plus the v6 will help handling.

any idea of the cost involved with a v8 conversion to 350chev without the cost of powerglide (already fitted) and motor? :)

MATE,
DEPENDS ON WHAT STATE YOU LIVE IN BUT 350 CHEVS ARE NOT PERMITTED IN MOST. 327 IS ABOUT THE BIGGEST YOU CAN PUT IN. lOTS OF WORK CHASSIS DIFF BRAKES RADIATOR SUPPORT RACK AND PINION STEERING ETC ETC. THIS IS NOT A JOB FOR THE FAINT HEARTED AND WILL CHEW UP 10 GEES ON AVERAGE. THIS SITE HAS LOTS OF STORIES IN REGARDS TO MODS JUST SURF MY FB/EK OR SHARING ADVICE.
lOTS OF LUCK.
