Identify the year of car

OK, I went back to this older discussion on date on manufacture.

I found some the rear wagon glasses and the tailgate still had the "armourplate safety glass" Both side glasses are dotted A and E. The Tailgate glass is dotted A and F.

Based on the example in the link it makes my EK a 3rd or 4th quarter 1959 ?? :shock: :shock:

I also looked up the Lucas and they do have a year and month stamped on them. :D :D :D :D :D :D :D :D :D
Mine (the Lucas) was made in October 1962 ? Wasn't sure were to look at first, it is on the bottom on the part facing the firewall. I took the cover off to see easier, but the numbers are still a little blurry in the photo.

So I have the following info:-
The Dusk Plum colour on the plate is a 1961 colour.
Lucas was made in October 1962 (could have been replaced also ?)
Glass was made 3rd and 4th quarter on 1959 ????? :shock:
The engine has been replaced with an EJ.
Its a wagon (No boot mat)
All the doors were FB (no help there).
Front glass has been replaced (no help there).
Driver side engine bay support is stamped EK232149 (any ideas :? )
ID Plate is stamped EK229 4166 S (Any ideas :? )

Based on the above I have concluded this car took a long time to build. Started in 1959 and was finished late in 1962, with various bits being done over the years :roll: :roll: .

Any other ideas :roll: :roll: :roll:

Thanks SunnyTim, sorry I musted have missed your last posts. :cry:
I checked the dots and found them on the rear side glasses. they were both different. I didn't know to look for two dots, So I'll go back again. :cry:

I was hopeing that the collection of plates on the other post may help in identofying number ranges verse total production, then you could get close to the month. Below are the total productions, it would be nice to know what they were by type and factory. :D :D

Checked the dots. :) :) :)

Driver side rear = A and E
Passenger side rear = A and E
Tailgate Glass = A and F

So glass was made in 3 and 4th quarters of 1961.
Therefore Car most likely made between October to December 1961 ? :? :shock:

Hi SunnyTim,

Any ideas what it means when there's a dot above the "T" in "Armourplate"? Or am I looking at entirely the wrong thing? :-) The left and rear windows of our ute both have marks above the "T". The stamp on the rear window is crystal clear (relatively speaking). I checked with an 8X loupe but couldn't see any other marks.

The car is definitely a 1960 FB (from both the colour code and the foundry stamps on the engine block). I'm pretty sure the left, right and rear windows are original. The right window is "A" and "S" (1st quarter, 1960).

Also, would you happen to know the origin/approx. year of these?

The windscreen is dotted on the "A" in "float" and "N" in "zone". The quarter vent is dotted on the "E" in "safety" and (I think) the 2nd "A" in "Armourglas".

I would hazard a guess at the "T" being the 10th Letter and therefore 1960? and the "E" being fourth quarter - late 1960 glass

Thanks very much. Out of interest, do you know when "ARMOURFLOAT" and "ARMOURGLAS" first started to be produced? Was it in the 1960s or later? I'm just wondering when the windscreen and quarter vent windows were replaced in our ute.

Thanks Tim. No, there's nothing unusual on the ID plate. It's been driving me up the wall, so I decided to hit google big time and found some useful things.

Here's the origin of "ARMOURFLOAT". From Don Loffler's "Still Holden Together":

"In addition to manufacturing window glass for Holdens on the production line, Pilkingtons also made replacement glass for use by the crash repair industry. The word 'Armourplate' was replaced by 'Armourfloat' on this type of glass."

The "MODIFIED ZONE" must have been the branding for zone-toughened windscreens (our ute still has the original sticker). The arrow indicates the toughened zone (driver's side).

The dot methodology for dating the glass still applies, starting with 1971 from what I can gather. This sort of tallies with a couple of patents I found that were filed in 1964/65, published in 1968/69, sound awfully like they're describing a method to make zone-toughened glass for cars and reference Pilkington Brothers.

So I'll take a wild leap of faith and conclude that the windscreen dates to 3rd quarter, 1970.

All I could find about "ARMOURGLAS SAFETY GLASS" was that it was also Pilkington glass. Glass with the hand-and-hammer-in-the-circle logo dates to the 1960s and the same dot methodology applies. However, the logos I found on the web don't quite match what's on our ute, so I'll have to keep hunting.
