IS THERE A FUTURE FOR POST 1948 MODIFIED VEHICLES?

Being young, I have an appreciation for many makes of cars that I have grown up with. I like ricers, euros, aussie cars but not Hyundais' or vn commodores

I can't stand people who say ohhhh, jap crap, it can't be any good.... The truth of the matter is they are often better

I am all for a West side street machine foundation, as long as it produces a magazine to the same standard as SM magazine. Oh, and I want a weekly edition

I have limited time due to Uni and Church commitments, but in my free time I would be happy to draft letters, meet with others to discuss the formation of a commitee or to even protest in my green mankini!

Hope to see this not fall away and come to something.

PS - Adam, don't sell your green EK. Get a bank loan. The post sale depression will feel worse than the stresses of repaying a small short term loan!!

had a long disscussion with a very good mate today clint from fat pick ups in morley clints whole bussiness revolves around modifying cars and licencing them for many clients he has his is in constant contact (weekly ) with reno and his offsiders at welshpool he is more than happy to help get things rolling as it will and is affecting his bussiness might even get him on this forum for some input ill check with you first blacky

mate you ant seen nothin yet his pick up is in the middle of a major rebuild ( yeah i know he just finished it) is now twin turbos and super charged new 2 tone double colour flame job looks awsume and a heap of other small changes but thats what clint is about keepin ahead of the trends he visits sema in the states every 2 years

G'Day blokes, computer has been down and the young bloke (who does all my typing cause im useless at it), is buried 5 nights a week with baseball, so its been hard to put up a post.

Lookin good Paul! Must be a lot of business' out there that rely upon modified vehicles as Clint does!

Consider how many folk are out there, days like Big Al's, Ace &*#@, Motorvation and nostalgia. Beside all the entrants, how many spectators have a modified car of some form?

are a lot of rods but in reality pre48's are a minority in comparison to all the other sheetmetal out there.

We are a "Sleeping Giant" that needs a damn good kick in the guts to waken. But lets not let a bunch of politicians or a D.P.I. worker that goes home to his rose garden in his sonata be the ones that kick us in the guts.

Craig (71munza) spoke to Reno about two weeks ago. Reno is on holidays at the moment but will be back Sept 1.

I spoke to Frank from cool rides about our issues and explained how a lot of rodders also have 50's and 60's cars that are impacted upon also. He made a good suggestion - print pamphlets/leaflets and distribute at cruises, shows etc. If someone can come up with a good layout with facts and issues i will gladly pay for the costs to print.
Personally im not keen on stickers, but maybe a discreet sticker to bring attention to the cause.

What is it worth to set up a website?
And is any one out there able to do a set up and maintain?
After all if we want to create action we should really have a base for supporters to lodge their interest. This would be something magazines should be putting into place if you think about it. They could advertise the site in their mags and they have all the abilities and political correctness to plant the seed and make it florish.
Personally, political correctness for me goes as far as "pull your head out of your arse and smell the roses."

There must be others out there with contacts. Chopped is doing all he can, so come on blokes, do you want to loose what you have! Is the ride you have the last one you will ever build? "I think not"
I dont care what people think of me so let me say "get off your fat arses and help!"

Just a little by lots of people can make a bigger difference than a handful of people trying to do it all. Even if its just to supply some contacts. We are not going to move mountains in 6 months but we do need to keep the ball rolling! To put a twist on what President Kennedy once said " Dont ask what the movement can do for you! Ask what you can do for the movement. Maybe someone knows someone who knows a politician that just might have a sympathetic ear (yeah! i know , but you see where i am comming from).Lets just keep the issues in mind! Leigh

If you want leaflets I also know a graphic designer who has a big custom cadillac, sure he would be more then willing to help.

I am happy to help out to secure my future, cos im positive that i will be having the same battle when I am your age.

Problem is, what do we put on the leaflets, what do i put on a video and what do i put on a website.

What are we overall trying to say?
what are we trying to do?
and what is doing all this going to contribute to the cause?

Much appreciated J, as for all the what do we do's, those answers will come in due course as we get our heads around the how do we implement this association/federation and what paths we take to get it up and running. So hang in there J and soon you will wish you hadnt put your hand up!!

Last week, the technical section of the D.P.I. met with DOTARS re: setting up a format where business' that deal with modified vehicles will be registered as an authorised business to deal with light vehicle construction and modification. These business' will have to meet certain criteria (accreditation?) to deal with engine swaps/suspension mods etc.

Sounds like an extra step foward from what HPaddict posted re: accreditation requirements for different mechanical business', but along the lines of the modified vehicle sector.

DOTARS expect to have it together within 2-3 months at which time information will be made available to those who will come under the new guidelines. I dont know wether this will be for the better of those involved with modified vehicles or not, but it will definately be an extra hassle for those requiring accreditation to enable their business to continue serving the modified vehicle sector. I will contact Dennis Hampton again in 2 months and see what the go is.

If we look at this on the positive side, they will probably need to implement an association similar to the MTA (i know there is a lot of business' out there with mixed feelings about the MTA) to enable a liason between the modified vehicle industry and DOTARS. One would hope that this could also be beneficial to the future of modified vehicles.

OK! I'm asking all of you out there to take sometime out to consider your ideas of what should be allowed when it comes to modifications to post 48 vehicles.

These ideas will be used before a group to enable some basic requirements to be placed on a short list of requests that should be achievable under the guidance of an engineer.

Lets be practical about this as a blown 502 is not a sensible place to start.
Regardless of how much we all would love to see such splendors.
I'm talking about more freedom with vehicle track, rim sizes (even big dishes if floating hubs are used), tubs if certain criteria is met, fuel cells, bonnet scoops or even phase 3 shaker scenarios e.g. hilborn style scoops that are free to sit through the bonnet and are attached to the motor providing they are sealed at the bonnet edge and not creating an impact on clear vision. Basic requirements for braking, based on a power to weight index. Suspension mods (with exception to ladder bars).

A sensible outlook that would be achievable under an engineer.
There must be others out there that have had issues as I have had trying to build something on the wild side, as I had intended the FJ Ute to be.

So spend a couple of days thinking about it, make some notes and post up your opinions and if you have a point to argue as to why it should be approved then lets here it!

-not needing engineer for red motors and hr front end conversions?
-different sized wheels

wheels up to 10-12 inches wide as long as they fit under guards with out fouling on anything and overall track considered rather than the stupid centre of tread type track they use now. would be a good start.
as for scoops hilborne style or K&N style round filters through the bonnet would be nice too maybe up to around 75mm out of bonnet would be nice.
torana style 4link rear ends rather than leaf spring style rears, someone needs to get through their thick heads a torana 4 link is not the same as a ladder bar style rear end. RCI type alloy fuel cells, and thats just the start

it wont be an easy task dealing with these numbsculls but im happy to contribute where i can.

count me in. yeah im doing a ek ute up and yes im going to modifie it only to make it safer . but what gets me and this isnt a bitch to rodders but id rather drive a car that has a good solid shell around you not a fibreglass shell wich they seem to let on the roads thease days .
