4 spot v VN calipers

Post by beersy »

guys
I've got a set of 4 spot calipers from a BLOODY VOLVO 264 74 model & also a set of VN Com. calipers, now I have always through that the 4 spots would be the go but does anybody actually know which would be better stoppers.

Ive used the volvo 4 spot in the past and they are a good caliper, but compared to the modern calipers they are bloody heavy and the rebuild kits are not cheap .You can with a fair bit of grinding get them to fit a 13 inch rim, not sure on vn calipers are they single spot ?..... I drove a mates V8 vn years ago and the lack of brakes was scary

It's actually for my HR Ben & I am running 14' wheels, I'm not too worried about the weight I just want the better of the two. The Comm. calipers are single pot & as you say the kits are cheaper ($30 v $80) so I wanted to find out which would be better before I go to the trouble & expense of putting new kits through either.

Dave the volvo calipers i use are ATP 4 spots and if yours are the same you will notice that there are two in lines. If you decide to use the volvo calipers (which are the better of the two) you need to plug one of the in lines and then drill two holes in the rear two pots ie so the two pots are connected being careful not to drill out of the casing  otherwise you would have to run the volvo mastercylinder etc with four lines
You might have joy bolting up the volvo discs as the bolt pattern is the same as hr

Ben your absolutly correct & I have cross drilled the pots of both sides of each caliper so the pots are all linked up & I will have two disc to possibly use, I have a set of undrilled HQ disc but they are actually to thick for the volvo calipers but I have the VN discs that are the same thickness as the Volvo, so if Iuse them I will also use the disc brake diff. from the VN as well. these diff will fit uncut under a HR with a lot mucking around & special offset wheels but I thinking of maybe having a go at shortening the diff myself, hell I can only scew it up if I fail !
