Rebuilding A Grey Motor - How Far Can You Go?
Rebuilding A Grey Motor - How Far Can You Go?
I'm considering rebuilding the grey motor i've got for my EK.. for the nostalgia of it.. and cause it'll be somethin different. I know they are piss slow motors and frankly my 202 in my HJ is slow enough.. let alone a 138.
So.. my question is this.. how far can you bore out a 138 (to CI) and along with a port and polished head, bigger valves and a cam, extractors and either a double barrel carby or modifying the manifold to fit two singles.. how would it go?

There are lots of mods that can be made to your sidplate motor to increase its performance.
But a basic rebuild on one of these is not a cheap undertaking, let alone adding the extra go fast bits.
If you think your 202 is slow, Nostalgia will not help you with a grey motor.
Value for money would be to fit a red motor, and get the car on the road.

G'day Nick,
I say go the nostalgia...
Few guys on the Forum have hot-warm greys...Thommo, Retro, Brown Bear, Craig. I'm building one for my wagon with triples.
Are you going to the Nats? If so one of them might let you take a warm grey for a spin and then see what you think.
regards
Stewart

I wonder whyratbox wrote:202 in a HJ is slow, gray motor won't be alot slower top speed but will take longer to get there
hotty gray will look kool but might only go as good as a stock red if it's lucky and will cost an arm and a leg to build
i had one once that had std 161 red pistons in it but end up splitting the bores
Better dead than red

I don't think i'll be goin to the Nats.. well.. i may since i do have that time off although my car won't be done unless i can get the rust work fixed on the whole car in like a week.. get a HR front end for it.. a working motor.. get all the brakes working again (they work just.. their shit and rusty..) and get all the interior done..
I just don't think i'll make it.
I've considered the grey but it really would be so much easier with a 186 or something.. I love the nostalgia of it and i wana keep the car to be pre '66 (HR front end..) and the only new parts on the car will be well besides repro stuff.. eventually some Moon Eyes gauges and smoothie wheels. I want it to be a floor shift and i'll be using a NOS Speco shifter for that.
So i'm a bit unsure still.. i like the nostalgia feel though.
Nick.
I run a red in my sedan, it gets up to 100 when I want it to but so do all the grey motor cars that I cruize with!
I decided to put a grey in the wagon, for ease of getting it back on the road (no engineers report).
If you want to go fast buy a Jap motor bike, like my old FZR 1000, I got up to 290 kph a couple of times, after that fast cars just didn't do it for me. Trev

Hey Deadsled, If ya wanta chuck the grey, I'll take it of ya hands for ya. I also know where you can go and unbolt a running 186 with syncro box out of a HG for $79 bucks with an exchange add $ 50 bucks for no exchange. He'll probably chuck in the radiator and all the bolt on's for next to nick's aswell. Your speco floor shifter should bolt straight up
. He might even have ya HR front aswell.
I've got some speed equip for the grey and would like to build another for a project down the track.
Cheers Theo Z...................
