EK speedo problem

Post by trobbins »

Speedo on my EK manual sedan is not working. Cable is all fine and spins easily, but does appear to engage into the transmission properly and doesn't turn when driving (ie. the problem is not the instrument panel end).

Shop manual doesn't comment on any gear problems that could occur with either the speedometer drive gear on the main transmission shaft, or the speedometer driven gear fitting assembly.

Any advice as to taking out the driven gear and checking for problems there.

Hey Tim

Check the cable again – if you disconnect at the speedo end remove the drive cable from the sleeve and make sure that there is a square drive on each end. I bet the cable is snapped and when you remove it you will find that there is no square drive at the gearbox end. That is probably why you think it is not engaging.

However if this is not the case -

When the cable is removed from the box use a 1 1/8” spanner to remove the drive assembly – once unscrewed it will slide out. The driven gear is made of metal and virtually no chance of broken teeth there but check anyway if the cable is ok.

If the cable and driven gear are ok then Good Luck in replacing the drive gear (a replacement gear box will be simpler)

If it is the cable that is snapped then check the speedo head before replacing with a new cable– I snapped a cable because the speedo head ceased up and would have done another if I had not realised the underlying problem.

Good Luck

Thanx FB 60,

I had pulled out the cable and checked the end. It was fine - a good square end to fit to the gearbox end - no sign of damage/break/burring/kinking.

I was hoping that the more likely failure was with the driven gear assembly - but it doesn't sound that way!

I will now extract the driven gear assembly and check it, and check the cablesheath connection to the assembly, and see if I can confirm where the problem is.

I just had the engine fully reco'd, so I will be pi**ed orf if the solution means a full gearbox extraction. Guess I will have to live without a speedo until the gearbox carks it (maybe there is an aftermarket electronic gizmo I can simply jury-rig - like a bicycle speedo - or should I go high tech and see if a GPS can work at 60kph - what an expensive thought!)

Problem was the cable sheath had pulled back from the assembly, along the spiral guide spring, just enough to stop proper engagement.
C'est la vie.
But I did notice other problems I need to fix - so it was worth the sortie.
