Change the needle and seat, and the accelerator pump piston. The carburettor turns into something completely different. The engine idled like it had a lumpy cam . . .

Air horn off (again). The float level was still too high. I lowered it a couple of millimetres, which seemed to help. I pulled the idle tube out and blew through it, then put the air horn back on. Thought that if the main jet was partly blocked with dirt I'd unblock it in the classic clap-hand-over-air-intake manner. Didn't need to. I started the engine and it settled to a smooth idle.

I think I've finally got Steve's carburettor sorted.
