FB wagon front wheels

Post by fjute »

Hi all , can anyone please advise me .........I am wanting to put jellybean mags on the car ,FB WAGON . What size fits the stock front end? I understand the stock wheels have a 3 inch backspace .I bought 13x6 mags and because the backspace is 4 inch it hits on the top control arm ( the guy i bought them from told me they will fit ,expensive lesson for me ! ) .
Any advice will be appreciated,thanks

Hey John

Don’t feel bad, I had the same experience! I bought what was sold as a set of four 14” x 6” jelly bean mags. Turns out they weren’t a set and with three rims at a backspace of 103mm hit the steering/suspension on full lock and one with a backspace space of 90mm. After much fluffing around I now have jelly bean rims on the front with a backspace of 90mm whilst the rear have a backspace of 103mm. All running 205 x70 profile tyres.

More details (pain) here https://www.fbekholden.com/forum/viewto ... 5&start=30

I did see a set of 13” jellybeans or Spitfires for sale on Facebook marketplace with new tyres. They are 13”x7” rear and 13”x6” front all with 185x70 tyres. They started out at $1200, now down to $1000 north of Adelaide.

Regards
Stephen

These were the wheels I was referring to, not jelly beans but Spitfires I believe.

Hi John,
Expensive lesson as you say. They will fit a balljoint front with Torana hubs, which have more backspace, but probably not HR hubs. Though the balljoint suspension may have slightly more clearance. Top of control arm is the first point to foul, followed by outer tie rod end.

You can fit spacers (illegal, unless you glue them to the rim, making them part of the wheel), but then you need longer studs or longer shank nuts. You can also relieve the front of the upper control arm slightly if they are only touching on lock. All in all, not ideal.

I have quite a few sets of rims at Willunga if you are in SA, that you are welcome to come and try, to get an idea what fits.

Not selling any alloys, just a set of old originals I’d like to get rid of.

John
Can’t comment on 15” rims as mine are 14” rims. With a backspace of 90mm the 14” rims clear the top pivot bolt and tie rod on the bottom when on full lock.

15” commodore rims foul the top control arm and tie rods on HR front ends. They are not a large enough diameter to “slip over”.

Some more schooling. Here we have a reverse stock 13”x6” on FB ute. Image

These are well over track and probably something like negative 15mm offset. Illegal in SA, be nice and sure footed but heavy steering and taxing on steering box etc.

These are the 13x6” on front of our HR front FB sedan. Image

The rim edge is close to the top control arm end and they are about 5mm within legal track, +8mm from memory. They fit perfectly. I got them made in about 89 at Adelaide wheel and rim.

Clay
You know wheels, are these jellybeans any good for a standard king pin front end? They are 13” 5 stud but I don’t know if they are early Holden stud pattern? The backspace looks ok but I have not measured them.

Stephen

John
Is this the sort of profile you have? If these fit you could run them on the front and deeper backspace on the back???
