I'm getting closer to owning a hoist. Plans for the replacement shed have been approved, and close to being ready to press the go button for demolish and rebuild. Very much looking forward to an insulated shed with sealed eaves and a rollerdoor that closes evenly to the floor.

Interested in thoughts though on two-post versus four. My initial plan was a 4-post hoist. Put the FED and trailer on it, lift it up and store the FB underneath. With a beam across the ramps it would make a sneaky engine hoist. With the 4-post hoist bolted to the floor, my mental picture says "safe to walk (and work) under". The shed has been planned to be tall enough (... just) to make it fit and still meet Council regulations. That in itself has been a battle.

Talking through my cunning plan with Number 1 Son and dad, and both laughed at me. Dad spent most of his working life under a hoist, and now Number 1 Son does too. Both suggested a 2-post hoist would be smarter - easier to work under. My mental picture though says "FED and a trailer, unbalanced load, sitting on only two posts isn't overly stable". Not sure if I'm overthinking it though.

I agree with no. 1 son & Dad. I have 3 x 2 post hoists & 1 x 4-poster & the 2-posters are way more versatile.

I use some of them for long term storage & the balance of the FED on a trailer won't be a problem.

The 4-posters are good for a quick drive-on, drive-off oil change or clutch job, but the 2-posters are much better for anything undercar, whether it be brakes, suspensions, exhaust, transmission, diff or whatever.

Main reasons I have gone with the four post are, space and the Landcruiser. I was told Toyota have banned their dealers using 2 post with the 70 series as they don’t have suitable forward side support points. The two post apparently requires more width due to the larger posts and this was an issue in my space. Also my slab is only 100mm which is allowable for this four post model but not two post. Finally this model is not required to be bolted down and can be relatively easily relocated between bays, and hopefully also outside to the carport as required.

I know 2 post hoists were banned on minesites YEARS ago after someone pulled the rear diff out of a Landcruiser and the whole shebang went over forwards .... I bought my first hoist from the minesite I was working at for 2 cartons of beer that was over 20 years ago now.

Borrowed a trailer and picked up the hoister yesterday.
Three mates came and gave me a hand to get it in to the shed, ready to chuck together.
The master runway is the heavy bit, containing the ram and all the cables.
