Brakes !

Post by Harko »

Can anyone tell me which year introduced (rear)self adjusting brakes ?
Im having a brain freeze and I can remember adjusting the EKs rear brakes but Im unsure if they were infact self adjusting or not .

Ive got this LJ diff ready to go into the car but Im not keen to bolt up the ek backing plates if they are any different to HR or HG because of the wheel cylinders - any help is apreciated .

G'day Harko,

Just consulted the Gregorys Shop Manual and it lists the "Hydraulic with Duo Servo shoe action and self adjusting mechanism" as starting in HD/HR ( not EH as I thought which has "Hydraulic with Duo Servo shoe action "only ).

Without having the self adjusting brake setup here at home to compare with the duo servo setup I can only guess by looking at the pics in the Gregorys Manual.

I'd say by looking at these pics that it wouldn't be possible to just bolt in the EK rear wheel cylinder in the self adjusting brake setup. There seems to be a considerable amount of difference there in the design.Best bet I reckon would be to get hold of a set of complete HD/HR self adjusting rear brakes and bolt them up.

If this info helps at all, the rear wheel cyl bore diameter is 1 1/16 inch from FX to FC, 1 inch in FB/EK and 13/16 in EJ to HR so there would be some braking effect difference found in using the smaller 13/16 inch EJ/HR rear wheel cylinders as opposed to the 1 inch FB/EK ones.

Someone else on the forum may be able to correct any errors I've made or give some other advice as to the interchange of the brake systems.

Hope this is at least of some help to you,

Cheers,

Terry.

If this helps,

Front wheel cylinder bore diameters,

FX to EK 1 3/16 inch
EJ,EH 1 inch
HD,HR 1 1/16 inch

Rear wheel cylinder bore diameters,

FX to FC 1 1/16 inch
FB,EK 1 inch
EJ to HR 13/16 inch.
