Much as I love a bit of a fabrication challenge, love having things like this arrive on my doorstep just a little bit more

Those curves in the corner would have been a bit of work (the last repairs didn’t bother). Getting all the captive nuts and reinforced bits made the purchase a no brainer

Before I start cutting the front, ran the nylon/wire brush over the legs. No rust!!! Visual inspection inside shows some surface rust but no pitting outside. I call that a win. For now I’m leaving it nice and shiny

Strip disk to get most of the paint and surface rust, then the rest with the nylon brushes and the wire brush in the tight spots though the wire brush tends to polish the rust and not remove it.

Degreaser was used first to soften the body deadner which I scraped off with chisels and a large pin punch for the radius’s.

Time consuming. Wish I had a sandblasting booth
Modified the strip disk to go in the drill with a bolt and a washer sandwiched between couple bigger washers. Vibrates a bit but means I can reverse direction on the drill so I don’t get a face full dirt

Need a big booth for front clip.

I'll have to try those nylon brushes.

Strip disc works best and lasts longer at low speed. Too fast and they melt. Being able to reverse is handy I suppose but they are a fair load and will wear our your drill. I use a cheap variable polisher on low speed, depending on how it loads up. This can depend on what is being removed. I prefer it to blasting as it can't really harm the metal and it is much less messy compared to blasting outside. Has its place getting in to tight spots for sure. Just need a decent compressor and outside space to make mess. Gun is about $30. 20kg bag of dried sand $5 at building supplies.

Cut the bottom out of the sub frame. Not the horror show I was expecting, although the top has a fair bit of surface rust and a few holes that will need some love. Bit of a theme with the rust - mainly drivers side. Must have been left parked on a hill.

If you mean the hoist then yeah its helpful for awkward things like this. Sub frame is not that heavy, and can be man handled if neccessary, but nice to be able to pick it up and spin it round one handed.

Balance point is just behind the rear front end mount bolts.

Yes, it looks like a premium ice cream tub.

I threaded thick rope through the rear holes and knotted the ends. Then use engine crane to fit up to inverted body on rotisserie.
