Righto , just so happened took a drive with my old man to pick up a 186S block ,186 and a 253, also thought for the price of two gaskets ill rip my water pump and thermostat off to inspect further.
So I had a look at the 186s motor
My 161 and hi comp head motor
And a blue 173 under the bench.

Seems all blocks have the little cast tunnel in the block from the water pump into the block up into the block deck , separate from the water in the block.

All the heads except the hi comp have a cast tunnel from the bottom of the head where is meets the block then up into the bottom of the thermostat
So the water flow in the head is separate to that in the lower of the thermostat outlet.
So both outlets on the passengers side would work with a heater.

My hi comp head unfortunately has no cast tunnel in the head separate, just travels from the block up into the normal water cooling of the head. See pic with red wire in it. And my head numbers
This also means its a direct by pass from the water pump to the head , dead heading?
I presume 149s are the same.

That inlet keeps drawing my eye Clint. It’s a cast one isn’t it? I’m guessing your top end is all EH HD.

You're right about the bypass. In the 149s and 179s, it's there to circulate at least some water through the cooling system with the thermostat closed, so that the thermostat is exposed to warmer water sooner than would be the case with no flow at all. In the HR and later motors, the bypass water still flows, but through the inlet manifold before returning to the pump.

Your cylinder head is from a 149, and was cast on December 11, 1964.

A 253 and two red motors is not a bad haul. What's the letter prefix on the engine number of the 186S?

Yes the more people that think they are boat anchors the better so the cheaper they become, a little story... back in the 90s when V8s into landcruiser utes were the rage , my old man did v8 conversions in them as a side , one of his cruiser utes was a 253 worked perfectly, tuned perfectly with hours and hours and hours getting the carby spot on and with some special tricks. every hooning around would leave for dead his mates blue fj45 with a 350 chev and other mates white fj45 with a 302, the guy he ended up selling the 253 cruiser ute too took it in for a gas conversion and the mechanic came out saying mate thats the faster 308 cruiser ute ive ever drivin , with a reply mate check the block its a 253. when you know what your doing you can get them to scream. :)

 it would be nice but i dont think it would be worth the headache of a conversion, maybe a wider engine bay like a hr or something someday when i find a hr ute to buy.
What bracket are you after mate

Yes mate bog stock just painted the holden red as well , i preferred it over the silver bog stock 161 carby as well (which has been testing my patience lately pissing fuel out the main jet when idle when it shouldnt be)

Yes mate should make nice few motors once they are rebuilt and painted.
The 186 s im not sure on the rest of the numbers , but it will be built with all S parts up top aswell just as if it were pulled from the car new.
What you saying makes full sense , i had a good look into it that system and flow now thanks for that mate.

Had a bit of time mount the unit and start getting the firewall access.
I was going to run a vertical bulk on the passengers side but bending the heater hoses from the unit around would not be to flash and also having a 149 head I have to use the water pump heater outlets on the drivers side.
The heater bulk head will have 90° each side , should work well.
The air con lines from in the car the #10 will need a 180° and head out near the vin plate, then to the compressor as in the pic.
The #6 from the unit will go out to under the guard so you won't see it, through the dryer also under the gaurd to the front condensor its the lower outlet.
The upper outlet on the condensor also through the front fender then out down to the compressor probably behind the battery tray.
The unit must have gone in and out the car 20 times quite time consuming.
I have vintage air remote mount facias for the vents and ac control unit for the moment but will get a steel facia panel made up and painted probably about 80mm.
Also keeping an eye on my black IIPA fermenting away in the shed.

Going to have to relocate the horn under the front fender, not much room between the condensor and bonnet catch.
Need to find some small thin thermo fans to squeeze in up front blowing through and only switch on with the aircon. I want to keep the old steel shitty 4 blade holden fan on the donk , that has kept the red at good temps in the 40 deg Perth summers.

The battery I have to relocate to the boot or get a mini one up front. Most mini race car ones I've read won't have juice for normal daily power duties of a cars demands. Any one have any tips.

Father in law called passed rear wheels rubbing i mentioned probably due to the fact they are 20x10s, the proper fronts will go on once the disk conversion is done.ImageImageImageImageImage
