Here's a thought: you could market your hubs and calipers on eBay as genuine 350 or XU-1 parts and sell them for ten times what you bought them for. HT V8/HG and XU-1 had 5/8" thick discs, and used these hubs and calipers; the difference is in the diameter of the brake discs (and the steering knuckles they were bolted to) to suit 14" or 13" wheels. So you have a choice between HG and XU-1 brake discs.

With drop stubs you might have problems with the calipers hitting the upper control arms on both full steering lock and full suspension bump. Perhaps mounting the calipers on the trailing side (a la Torana) may help.

Wow thanks Rob this is priceless information not just for helping me out but also other doing disk conversions as well.
This is very interesting
So the ht V8 had them then all hg as standard? but XU1 used smaller diameter disk but still 5/8th thick?
With dropping 2" spindles i wont be able to use 13s need 14s but have 14inch hg steelies anyways, so maybe XU1 disks with smaller diameter than hg v8 diameter might work better with wheels and turning circle of calipers touching upper or lower control arms. do the XU1 disks require the caliper to sit closer down or just same bolt locations and height as hg v8

I called up the old fella i bought the brakes off had a good chat, nice guy has a h-ktg front end in a hot rod, i asked about the crescent spacers thanks for telling me about them rob,he mentioned he forgot to post the crescent spacers so they are on their way now across Aus to WA
I also got the measurements of the disks he was using i didn't get them posted as the price was much over the price of new ones here locally.
so he said in imperial then i asked for metric much easier 8)
5/60 thick then said 14.2 mm thick not sure on the 5/60 measurement
They had a 270mm diameter and 9/16 = 14.287mm
and If they were ment to be 5/8 thick they should measure 15.875 mm thick?
Im guessing V8 calipers and he used 6cyl disks? can anyone see and issue with this.
Ive found v8 new disks at my local parts shop im just not sure if they have a different disk offset to suit the calipers compared to the cyl disk and this will affect steering arms or if v8 disk are just .5mm wider per side of the disk and the center of the top of the disk or "offset" of the 6 or v8 is still the same

I think using HD HR caliper use HD HR hub and disc, HKTG ditto, 6 cyl or v8. Torana hub face has a wider offset I believe which you need to run more positive offset wheels to clear guards. But then there are plenty of torana front backspace suited jelly beans getting around. Don't ask me how I know.

Fair enough mate , i've found a local supplier that's ordered in the v8 disk and new wheel bearings, so will wait for them to come in then do a mock up fit of everything. i also found a kit while researching that supply's caliper spacers and the crescent spacer for $50 , seems people who don't accidentally come across v8 calipers like me who want bigger v8 disks could use this or put this spacer kit in 6cyl ones and sell them as v8 ones.

Yes you’re lucky there as the thicker discs are what people want. I don’t know if it’s much of an improvement, but it’s what the GTR and v8s had. You’re going to end up with pretty good brakes in any case.

They hopefully should be ok in todays standard but awesome in the back in the days standard.

To be honest there is not one issue with my front drum brakes , the dont squeak, fade , pull to one side ,or ever lock one wheel up. I can jump on the skids no hands on the wheel and its pulls up smooth and straight.

The main reason for the upgrade is drop spindles. Even the king pin isn't bad I've just run out of travel for the ride height i want.
If they made drop spindles to take the fb drums I wouldnt bother with disks. Maybe once im running disk I'll change my mind. Image

Why did you buy a subframe bolt kit ? You changing them too ???

Big cut-and-paste coming -

No. The HKTG steering knuckles mount the caliper further outwards to suit the bigger diameter disc. But I think your steering knuckles are set up for both Torana and HKTG discs. Measure distance from stub axle to caliper bolt holes to find out.

That'll be 0.560". 9/16" = 0.5625".

I reckon so. But the discs may have been machined down.
Im guessing V8 calipers and he used 6cyl disks? can anyone see and issue with this.
That is a possibility. Wait. I think the HK (all) /HT 6 discs are 1/2" (12.7 mm) thick.
Ive found v8 new disks at my local parts shop im just not sure if they have a different disk offset to suit the calipers compared to the cyl disk and this will affect steering arms or if v8 disk are just .5mm wider per side of the disk and the center of the top of the disk or "offset" of the 6 or v8 is still the same
The disc centreline is in the same place for both 6 cyl and V8 discs. The spacers accommodate the fatter disc.

More useless info: Torana steering knuckles are similar in appearance to HD/HR. Bigger hub nut thread in Torana than HD/HR. The big difference is greater steering axis inclination in Torana steering knuckles than on HD/HR. You can bolt any Torana brakes from LC to UC onto an HD/HR steering knuckle. But there is a caliper-to-disc offset problem with LC/LJ discs and calipers on HD/HR steering knuckles. It's about 1/16", and you can get away with it (just) if you delete the crescent spacer.

Just grabbed them in case they needed to be used with the hybrid HR/FE-EH rarespares rubbers , they can be returned no worries if not used

Those bolts hold the subframe to the body not the crossmember to the subframe ???

Not to sure they are the ones i got given after i said i was installing a hr front end so maybe given the wrong ones ?, i don't know what they are ment to look like yet i haven't pulled a k-frame of a early Holden yet.

Righteo , great tips and guidelines mate,
Ive done a lot of this stuff on early commodores and pre common rail landcruisers with all the knowledge of what parts are from what and what can retro fit on to others but holdens that came out with carbys nothing at all so this is good.
I had ordered in the disk before your reply but exchange if they don't fit is fine to exchange , i noticed on ebay they make a ventilated disk for the HG but to late now.
im hoping to take the parts to my old mans tomorrow and use his press and get the bearing and lower ball joints pressed in then i can assemble the lot and check for brake disk , caliper clearances with full suspension travel and mod to suit, and try test fit the k frame to the car the week or so after that.

Would pressing the ball joints in for a test fit then out for later on when ever thing gets sand blasted and powder coated then back in again for final fitment bugger them up ?, are they a once in once out then bin fitment?
